Malaysia Aviation Group head Izham Ismail to step down

Malaysia Aviation Group said its long-serving Group Managing Director, Izham Ismail, will retire at the start of 2026 after nearly five decades with the company. The change marks the end of a 47-year career for Ismail at Malaysia Airlines and sets up a leadership transition during a period of renewed financial stability for the airline group.

Malaysia Aviation Group said Izham will step down on January 31, 2026. The company has named Captain Nasaruddin Bakar, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer of Malaysia Airlines, as the incoming Group Chief Executive Officer and President. The role is newly created and expands responsibilities across the company’s airline and non-airline divisions.

Nasaruddin has spent more than 30 years at Malaysia Airlines in a variety of operational and strategic roles. Malaysia Aviation Group says he brings deep familiarity with the company’s structure, culture and long-term plans. As Group CEO and president, he will oversee the execution of Malaysia Aviation Group’s strategic priorities, including operational improvements, customer experience initiatives and long-term growth targets across the organization.

Leadership amid crisis

Izham joined Malaysia Airlines in 1979 as a pilot and rose through management positions in flight operations, fleet management, and corporate leadership. He took over as Group Managing Director in December 2017, a period defined by financial pressure and major restructuring following the twin crises of Flight MH370, a Boeing 777 that disappeared over the Indian Ocean in 2014, and MH17, a 777 that was shot down by a Russian missile over eastern Ukraine later in 2014. The company says his leadership was central to stabilizing the group and guiding its return to profitability.

During his tenure, Malaysia Aviation Group restructured its fleet, streamlined operations and focused on improving financial performance. That effort included a multi-year transformation plan, renegotiated aircraft leases, cost-reduction measures and a reorganization of several business units. Malaysia Airlines also strengthened alliances with partner carriers in Asia and expanded regional connectivity as travel demand recovered after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Izham played a visible role during the Covid crisis, when border restrictions and reduced passenger traffic placed significant pressure on the airline sector. Malaysia Aviation Group said the company’s return to profitability in recent years reflects the results of long-term restructuring and a more disciplined operating strategy under his leadership. The group has not released updated financial targets for 2026, but the leadership transition comes as travel markets in Asia continue to recover.

Nasaruddin enters the top role as Malaysia Airlines works to maintain its improved financial footing and advance modernization plans. The airline has evaluated future fleet needs, digital systems investments and customer-experience upgrades as part of its long-term strategy. Malaysia Aviation Group said Nasaruddin will lead these initiatives while strengthening the group’s broader portfolio, which includes cargo, aviation services, and loyalty programs.

Transition already underway

The company has not announced any other executive changes tied to the transition. Malaysia Aviation Group said the leadership handover process is already underway, with both executives preparing for an orderly shift in responsibilities.

Malaysia Airlines operates a fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft across a regional and long-haul network centered on Kuala Lumpur. The carrier is one of Southeast Asia’s major network airlines and continues to rebuild international traffic levels after pandemic-related disruptions. Malaysia Aviation Group oversees several aviation-related businesses in addition to the airline, including engineering, ground handling and logistics services.

The company says additional details about its strategic plan will be shared later this year.
