British regional carrier Eastern Airways has suspended all flights and filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator, a formal step under UK insolvency law that grants short-term protection from creditors while a company seeks a rescue or restructuring. The move, announced October 27, 2025, effectively grounds the airline after 28 years of operation.
According to the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), all Eastern Airways services have been canceled and passengers with booked flights are being told not to travel to airports. The regulator urged those with future bookings to make alternative arrangements and said information about refunds will be issued “in due course.”
The filing, submitted to a UK court, gives the company up to 10 business days to find a buyer or new financing before administrators are formally appointed. The notice also prevents creditors from taking enforcement action during that period. The surrender of the carrier’s aircraft to lessors suggests liquidation is likely.
Eastern Airways, based at Humberside Airport in North Lincolnshire, served a network linking Aberdeen, Wick, Teesside International, Humberside, and London Gatwick, as well as Newquay in Cornwall. Some routes were operated under public service obligation (PSO) contracts similar to the Essential Air Service program in the United States.
According to The Independent, Eastern had already stopped selling tickets and returned most of its fleet to leasing companies before filing the notice. The paper reported that management blamed financial pressures linked to rising operating costs and weak demand on certain domestic routes.
Aviation database ch-aviation reported the airline carried about 1.3 million passengers annually but recorded a £19.7 million net loss for the fiscal year ending March 2024, with total debt near £26 million.
The airline’s withdrawal leaves several UK regions without direct air links. Its Aberdeen-Wick service provided essential connectivity for the North Sea oil industry, while the Gatwick-Newquay route offered a faster link between London and Cornwall than the seven-hour rail journey. The UK Department for Transport said it is working with local authorities and other operators to assess replacement options.
Eastern Airways was founded in 1997 to fly workers between Humberside and Aberdeen and later expanded into scheduled services, charter flights, and sports-team travel. It operated a mixed fleet of Embraer E170 and E190 regional jets and ATR 72-600 turboprops.
In recent years, the airline struggled with competition from low-cost carriers and reduced demand following the Covid-19 pandemic. It previously partnered with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to feed passengers into Amsterdam Schiphol but the planned services were never launched.
As of October 28, 2025, most aircraft had been ferried to storage sites around the UK. The airline’s website did not make any mention of the recent financial turmoil, but it also was impossible to book flights using the online schedule lookup tool. Unless new investors are found within days, the appointment of administrators would likely mark the end of Eastern Airways as an independent carrier.
