Singapore’s Changi Airport (SIN) has opened its first sensory-friendly facility designed to support neurodivergent travelers and their caregivers during their journey.

Called the Calm Room, the space spans more than 200 square meters and provides a quiet, calming environment for passengers with invisible disabilities, helping them manage sensory overload and travel-related stress.

Located in Terminal 2’s departure transit area, the facility is the latest addition to Changi’s CARE@Changi program, which works to create a more inclusive travel experience for all passengers.

According to Changi Airport, the Calm Room’s design was created in partnership with organizations including the Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) and Metta Welfare Association (MWA), whose expertise helped ensure the space meets the specific needs of neurodivergent individuals.

Changi Airport Group (CAG) also conducted interviews and feedback sessions with families of people with invisible disabilities to create a space that is both safe and comforting for neurodivergent travelers and their companions.

The facility represents a growing recognition within the aviation industry of the need for inclusive infrastructure that accommodates diverse passenger needs.

The Calm Room features four distinct zones, each designed to accommodate different sensory requirements and preferences. This includes quiet areas for rest and recovery, as well as supportive environments specifically created to help passengers decompress from sensory overload or emotional stress.

Visitors enter a calming, neutral-toned space that provides separation from the busy terminal environment. The facility also includes a virtual Changi Experience Ambassador display, offering passengers on-demand assistance when needed.

“At Changi Airport, we are committed to create a travel experience that is inclusive and respectful of every individual’s needs,” said Ang Siew Min, Senior Vice President, Airport Operations Services at Changi Airport Group.. “We recognize that the airport environment may be overwhelming for some. The Calm Room is designed to provide passengers and their caregivers the comfort, support, and peace of mind to navigate travel with ease.”
