IndiGo has finalized a firm order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, converting a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2025 into a binding agreement. The announcement, made by Airbus and IndiGo on October 17, 2025, brings IndiGo’s total A350 commitments to 60 aircraft as the airline prepares to expand into long-haul international markets.
Airbus said the order marks a significant step in IndiGo’s international growth strategy, providing additional range and efficiency for its planned expansion into new global destinations. Deliveries are expected to begin later this decade, though neither company disclosed a detailed schedule.
“Today is a special day for IndiGo as we solidify our commitment to expanding our international footprint and offering unparalleled connectivity to our customers,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo. “The conversion of this MoU into a firm order for 30 additional A350-900s is a testament to our confidence in the future of Indian aviation and our strategic partnership with Airbus.”
Elbers said the A350 will play a central role in IndiGo’s future fleet as the airline prepares to launch long-haul flights for the first time. The aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines under a long-term TotalCare support agreement that includes continuous engine health monitoring and maintenance services throughout the life of the fleet.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Sales for Airbus Commercial Aircraft, said the order highlights IndiGo’s ambitions to expand beyond its traditional short-haul markets. “The A350’s fuel efficiency, range, and passenger comfort align perfectly with IndiGo’s growth plans and long-haul network strategy,” he said.
The new commitment converts 30 purchase rights into firm orders, building on IndiGo’s initial order for 30 A350-900s placed in April 2024. The first 30 were IndiGo’s initial widebody purchase and marked the airline’s entry into the long-haul segment. With the latest agreement, IndiGo now holds firm orders for 60 A350-900s, all powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.
The A350-900 is Airbus’s most advanced twin-aisle aircraft, seating between 300 and 410 passengers depending on configuration. It is designed for long-range operations and uses lightweight composite materials that reduce fuel consumption and emissions by about 25 percent compared with older widebody models. The aircraft can operate on up to 50 percent sustainable aviation fuel, with Airbus targeting full compatibility by 2030.
IndiGo, based in Gurugram, is India’s largest airline by fleet size and passenger numbers. It operates more than 400 aircraft and runs about 2,200 daily flights, connecting 90 domestic and 40 international destinations.
Founded in 2006, IndiGo has built its business around a low-cost, high-frequency model using primarily Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft, along with ATR 72 turboprops for shorter routes. Its move into long-haul service marks a strategic expansion into new markets connecting India with Europe, East Asia, and North America.
India’s fast-growing aviation sector has fueled record aircraft orders in recent years, driven by economic expansion and rising demand for international travel. Airbus maintains a long-standing presence in the country, with its A320 family serving as the backbone of India’s domestic fleets.
At the end of September 2025, Airbus had received more than 1,400 orders for the A350 from 63 customers worldwide. The addition of IndiGo’s latest firm order further strengthens Airbus’s position in one of the world’s most dynamic air travel markets.
Neither IndiGo nor Airbus disclosed financial terms of the agreement.
