Lufthansa unveils special centenary livery on a B787-9

German airline Lufthansa has unveiled a special livery, applied to a Boeing 787-9 aircraft, to mark the 100th anniversary of its foundation.

This unique design depicts the carrier’s iconic flying crane, painted in white and extending its wings over the length of the mostly dark blue fuselage. The number “100” is also painted on one side of the aircraft, with the dates “1926-2026” on the other one.

Although the present-day Lufthansa was technically founded in 1953, with this livery, the airline somehow claims back the heritage of the eponymous first German flag carrier, Deutsche Luft Hansa, which was established in 1926, during the years of the Weimar Republic.

The aircraft sporting the special centennial livery is D-ABPU, which is one of the new Boeing 787-9 on order from Boeing. This aircraft is being fitted at Boeing’s plant in Charleston, North Carolina, ahead of its delivery, which is expected in November 2025, with its entry into service planned for December.

The aircraft, like all new Dreamliners Lufthansa will be getting from now on, will arrive to Frankfurt already fitted with the carrier’s new signature Allegris cabin (Lufthansa welcomed the first Allegris-fitted B787 in August 2025).

Earlier in 2025, another major airline, Delta Air Lines, also marked its centenary with a special livery, although in that case it was an Airbus A321neo which was decorated this way.
