"50% More Seating": American Airlines To Renovate Reagan National Airport Admirals Club

American Airlines has announced that it will be renovating its Admirals Club at Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport. Beginning in early 2026, the Admirals Club located in Concourse D will close for a full renovation. When it is reopened, it’s expected that the Admirals Club will have 50% more seating and span more than 10,000 square feet, in addition to a new visual design.

The Admirals Club in Concourse D is one of three that American Airlines operates at Washington-National, with the other two being located in Concourse C and Concourse E. This will also be the second newly refurbished Admirals Club located at the airport. American Airlines has been heavily investing in its Admirals Clubs and also opening new Flagship Lounges as part of a renewed focus on product.

A Refurbished Lounge At Washington-National

American Airlines will be refurbishing its Admirals Club at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Specifically, it’s renovating the Admirals Clubs located in Concourse D at Terminal 2. The project will begin in early 2026 and will result in roughly 50% more seating space. In addition, the lounge will now span more than 10,000 square feet and include more power ports as well as a refreshed visual design.

The new Admirals Club will feature design elements inspired by the city of Washington D.C., and will come with upgraded amenities, along with more seating options. In addition, the renovated lounge will come with airside views of the Washington Monument and the US Capitol building. The Concourse D Admirals Club will be closed during renovations, and American Airlines customers will still be able to access the lounges in Concourse C and Concourse E.

When formally announcing the renovation, American Airlines Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden stated,

“We’re proud to serve the Washington, D.C. market, and it’s essential that we have the lounge footprint to support all of our customers in this important hub… The redesigned Admirals Club® lounge will provide ample seating, an upscale design and elevated amenities that reflect the premium experience our customers deserve.”

American Airlines operates three Admirals Clubs at Washington-National. The Admirals Club in Concourse E has also recently been refurbished, while American plans to refresh (but not renovate) the Admirals Club in Concourse C. American has also invested significantly in upgrading Admirals Clubs across the US, including in Denver and Newark. This has taken the form of renovating lounges, opening new locations, and improving catering.

American Airlines has been shifting focus towards the customer experience, as it trails behind Delta Air Lines and United Airlines in profitability. Its two competitors have been running away with profits in part due to their premium image. American Airlines strategically moved down-market in the 2010s, and it’s now recording a tiny fraction of the profits that its rivals make, or even losing money.

In the Washington, D.C., market, American Airlines holds a unique position. It’s the largest carrier at Washington-National, which is the preferred airport for domestic flying. The other legacy competitor in the area is United Airlines, with its hub in Washington-Dulles. Washington-National has a perimeter restriction, meaning that American’s network is limited, while United operates a large transatlantic hub. However, American can command a fare premium due to Washington-National’s location.

American Airlines made a bet in the late 2010s that reducing costs and cutting corporate contracts would lead the company to success. American installed an extra row of economy seats on its Boeing 737-800s compared to competitors, it removed seatback screens from narrowbodies, it continues to offer less extra-legroom seating compared to rivals, while its long-haul network remains the smallest of the “US Three”.

As passengers continue to prefer Delta and United due to their premium brands and extensive international networks, American is placing a greater focus on the passenger experience. As previously discussed, American is upgrading its Admirals Clubs across the nation, while also opening new locations. In addition, it’s also opening new Flagship Lounge locations in Charlotte and Miami for business class passengers.

Perhaps the most notable change that American has made is the upgrade of its widebody cabins. It’s taking delivery of new Boeing 787-9s with larger premium cabins as well as upgraded seats, including the Elevate Ascent with doors. In addition, American will install the same seats on all Boeing 777s, and it’s taking delivery of new Airbus A321XLR aircraft with upgraded cabins.
