Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 11, 2025, for its new $1.7 billion state-of-the-art terminal ahead of its entry into service.
The event, which was attended by around 300 guests, including Pennsylvania’s governor Josh Shapiro, marks the start of the countdown towards the new terminal’s public opening, slated for November 2025.
Pittsburgh’s new terminal already underwent its first public trial on September 3, 2025, in which some 300 participants tested the airport’s different services and procedures in near real-life conditions. A second public trial will take place before the official inauguration.
The new terminal represents a significant change in the way Pittsburgh International Airport operates. In fact, while many new terminal projects around the world are about capacity expansion, Pittsburgh’s is about resizing, essentially accepting its post-hub reality.
Formerly a hub for US Airways (an airline acquired by American Airlines in 2013), the current layout of the airport, with two separate terminals connected by an underground rail link, had been designed to handle up to 30 million passengers. However, the decision by US Airways to abandon hub-and-spoke operations at Pittsburgh in 2004 represented a drastic drop in passenger numbers from which Pittsburgh International Airport has never recovered. The airport handled just under 10 million passengers in 2024.
The new airport design does away with the old landside terminal, which will be demolished, and adds a new integrated main hall adjacent to the existing X-shaped airside concourse. The number of gates will be reduced from 75 to 63 in the process.
With the new design, airport planners aim to provide a more convenient passenger experience and to achieve an increase in the efficiency of operations, reducing the distances within the airport perimeter. People and luggage will have much shorter transit times when the new facility opens.
