Vietnam Airlines has adopted Lido Flight 4D, the next-generation flight planning system developed by Lufthansa Systems. Lido Flight 4D helps airlines improve their operational efficiency and safety, integrating various modes of data to calculate optimal routes.

The Vietnamese carrier is a loyal user of other Lufthansa Systems products, including its Lido mPilot, Lido FMS, and Lido AMDB solutions. With its optimized flight planning solution, Vietnam Airlines anticipates strengthening its operational performance in several key areas, such as fuel efficiency, emission reductions and on-time performance (OTP).

The airline becomes the latest global carrier to use Lido Flight 4D, joining the likes of All Nippon Airways (ANA), Emirates and Malaysia Airlines. The state-of-the-art flight planning system was developed to streamline flight operations and improve operational performance and safety. It offers airlines a host of enhancements, including automation and real-time data updates — such as weather, air traffic management and NOTAMs — to improve situation awareness.

Vietnam Airlines says that adopting Lido Flight 4D will prove a major milestone on the airline’s journey to become a 5-star carrier, currently holding a 4-star rating with Skytrax. It will enable the carrier to tap into a global network of navigational data and airport mapping, as well as integrating seamlessly into Vietnam’s existing suite of Lufthansa Systems solutions.

To Ngoc Giang, Executive Vice President at Vietnam Airlines, commented,

“With the support from Lufthansa Systems, we are well-positioned to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the future, reinforcing our status as a premier airline in Asia and beyond.”

How Will This Benefit Passengers?

Greater operational efficiency ultimately offers several benefits for passengers downstream, with airlines able to deliver a more reliable and resilient product. Firstly, passengers are likely to experience fewer delays due to the system’s perks, which means arriving on time and avoiding prolonged airport delays. This can be particularly important for travelers with connecting flights, ensuring they don’t miss their onward connections due to a late arrival.

With airlines able to cut unnecessary fuel consumption and other expenses tied to inefficient routes and delays, passengers can benefit from lower airfares. Optimal routings can also lead to a smoother onboard experience, allowing airlines to avoid areas of poor weather.

The use of optimized planning systems will help an airline to meet its sustainability goal by reducing emissions and fuel use, a key factor in an industry imposing increasingly stringent sustainability targets. With all the various benefits of such technologically-advanced planning systems, passengers can travel with fewer delays while supporting a cleaner and more sustainable aviation industry.

Modern Flight Planning Wonders

Today’s flight planning systems are a major leap forward from the legacy tools that dominated the airline industry just a decade or two ago. Modern platforms — like Lido Flight 4D and Sabre’s Flight Plan Manager — are built around automation and real-time data integration, drawing on various data sources to model possible route scenarios before selecting the best choice.

Dispatchers have traditionally relied heavily on semi-manual software that had limited integration with real-time data, but this has been changing rapidly. New systems enable the operations team to respond instantaneously to changes in data, allowing for dynamic decision-making and adaptation to external factors. Additionally, the newest systems are developed for interconnectivity within an airline’s operating ecosystem, driving up overall efficiency and reliability.

These advancements are also playing a growing role in the industry’s push for decarbonization, with airlines able to make more precise fuel calculations. Lufthansa Systems is a leading global aviation IT company with over three decades of industry experience. As a subsidiary of German carrier Lufthansa, the company works with over 350 customers with its portfolio of solutions, which includes Lido Flight 4D, Lido mPilot, Lido FMS, and Lido AMDB.
