Nearly 7 Hours: United Airlines Begins Its New Longest International Boeing 737 MAX Flights From Denver

On October 26, United Airlines inaugurated service from Denver to Punta Cana. This city pair had never been served before. It is notable for various reasons. For example, as far as United’s Colorado hub is considered, it is the airline’s new longest international Boeing 737 MAX service and the new longest international narrowbody operation.

Airlines across the world introduced hundreds of new routes on or around October 26. This is because that was when northern carriers switched to winter schedules based on IATA slot seasons. A hand-picked selection of subjectively exciting examples will feature in my celebratory Weekly Routes article, which will be published on October 28 (see the most recent edition).

On a great circle basis, this brand-new route covers 2,268 nautical miles (4,200 km) each way. Until the first flight on October 26, United’s longest international single-aisle service from Denver this year was to San José. This link to the Costa Rican capital is 173 nautical miles (320 km) shorter than to Punta Cana. (San Juan, Puerto Rico, has been ignored here as it is considered domestic.)

Punta Cana is United’s second-longest single-aisle-operated international market from Denver of all time. And it is the longest such offering in nearly ten years. It is 18 nautical miles (33 km) shorter than Panama City, which the Star Alliance member operated between December 2014 and February 2016. Copa took over that route in December 2017.

Things are different by the maximum block time (measured as chocks-off-to-chocks-on). At 6h 45m back to Colorado, Punta Cana is United’s new longest-ever international link by the MAX and narrowbodies from Denver. Panama City was ‘only’ up to 6h 10m.

Over 70 Cities Connect To/From Punta Cana

Based on waiting no more than four hours in Denver and flying no more than 30% out of your way, 72 cities connect on a two-way basis to/from Punta Cana. This is based on schedule analysis using November data. Cities include Anchorage, which United will serve four times daily next summer.

In the 12 months to September 2025, the 72 cities had approximately 510,000 passengers to/from Punta Cana (nearly 1,400 daily). With just 10% of the market, United was the third-largest operator. In contrast, American had 30% of the traffic and Delta had 27%. The new service will help United to grow its share.

The five most popular unserved markets were Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Omaha, Phoenix, and Las Vegas. Of course, these are already easily reachable via United’s other hubs and with other carriers. Indeed, Denver-Punta Cana is particularly good for many smaller cities that have one-stop United service for the first time.

Across All Carriers, It Is Denver’s 3rd Longest International Narrowbody Service

When all airlines serving Denver are considered, United’s new offering is the airport’s third-longest international single-aisle route. This is based on distance. Unsurprisingly, Icelandair from Keflavik is firmly first, followed by Copa from Panama City. When time is considered, Copa’s offering ranks third, behind Icelandair’s long-served offering and United’s new market.

Iceland’s flag carrier has as few as four weekly departures during the winter and a double daily operation during the summer. The 737 MAX 8 and 757-200 are deployed, with the 757 returning next summer. While it might change, the aging but characterful 757 is due to operate all flights during next year’s peak season.
