Lufthansa Group to slash 4,000 jobs citing advances in AI and digitalization

The Lufthansa Group has announced it will slash around 4,000 jobs by 2030, citing “profound changes” brought about by advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalization.

At its Capital Markets Day in Munich on September 29, 2025, the company said it was “reviewing which activities will no longer be necessary in the future” as it looks to drive improvements in efficiency.

On September 12, 2025, the Lufthansa Group announced that from 2026 its subsidiary airlines will lose some decision-making power as it looks to centralize some processes.

These included changes to the organizational structure, processes, the financial management framework and cross-group collaboration.

Today’s announcement sees the company go even further with its plans for “integrated cooperation” between mainly Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines.

The Lufthansa Group mentioned “duplication of work” as a proponent of why changes were necessary.

“The profound changes brought about by digitalization and the increased use of artificial intelligence will lead to greater efficiency in many areas and processes,” said a spokesperson for the Lufthansa Group.

Most job cuts will be in Germany with the focus on administrative rather than operational roles.

Other announcements at Capital Markets Day

The Lufthansa Group expects significantly increased profitability by the end of the decade and therefore has set itself new ambitious medium-term financial targets.

The company aims to achieve Adjusted EBIT margin of 8-10% between 2028 and 2030, Adjusted ROCE (Return on Capital Employed) before taxes of 15-20% and Adjusted Free Cash Flow of over €2.5 billion ($2.9 billion) per year.

Additionally, the Lufthansa Group expects to add more than 230 new aircraft by 2030, including 100 long-haul aircraft.

The group is also planning to increase the number of active members loyalty program “Miles & More” by 50% by 2030.
