LATAM Chile pilots set to strike over unrestored pre-pandemic salaries

Pilots for LATAM Airlines in Chile, a subsidiary of the LATAM Airlines Group, will go on a strike after overwhelmingly rejecting the airline’s latest pay proposal.

The Latam Pilots Union (SPL), which represents the majority of the airline’s pilots, announced in a statement that the strike will begin at midnight on November 12, 2025. The airline confirmed that 464 pilots will participate in the work stoppage.

On November 3, 2025, the pilot union rejected the company’s salary increase proposal during negotiations. The union voted in favor of the strike due to the company’s refusal to restore pilots’ salaries to pre-pandemic levels, with 97% of its members supporting this decision.

The union said that after LATAM’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy from 2020 to 2022, pilots who accepted pay cuts to help the airline are still waiting for their pre-2020 salaries to be restored, unlike executives who have already received theirs.

“We find it inexplicable that the company’s management has led us by the hand to a strike that we have always considered avoidable if you compare the profits obtained by the company and the moderation of the labor demands,” said Mario Troncoso, President of the Latam Pilots Union.

The union said that the company “never showed the figures on which it based its economic proposal” and “refused to honor its commitment to return the conditions the union temporarily lowered in 2020”.

In response to the upcoming strike, the airline announced that industrial action could lead to some flight cancellations on November 12 and 13, 2025, without specifying how long it might continue.

The carrier said that the flight cancellations will impact “less than 10% of passengers traveling to or from Chile” and has offered travelers the option to change flights or receive full refunds during the strike.

“Latam reaffirms its ongoing willingness to engage in dialogue with the union and its commitment to reaching an agreement that benefits all parties,” the airline said.

LATAM Airlines Chile, headquartered in Santiago, is an important subsidiary of the LATAM Airlines Group, which was established in 2012 through the merger of Chile’s LAN Airlines and Brazil’s TAM Airlines.

LATAM is the largest airline group in Latin America, with additional subsidiaries in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru.
