IndiGo, the largest airline within the fast-growing Indian market, has announced the details of the inaugural routes with its new Airbus A321XLRs. The airline will commence service from Mumbai to Athens on January 23, 2026, with service from New Delhi to Athens beginning the following day.
IndiGo is set to receive the first aircraft from its order for 69 A321XLRs before the end of the year. The airline is set to be the largest customer for the A321XLR, using its additional range to reach new destinations across Europe, East Asia and Africa. The carrier has also just finalized a firm order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 aircraft, converting a Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2025 into a binding agreement.
Schedule Details For The New Routes
IndiGo had previously announced that Athens would be the first destination for its incoming A321XLRs, but had not confirmed departure airports, launch dates, or flight timing. The airline has now confirmed that it will fly three times weekly from 
Mumbai Airport, with service starting on January 23, with a thrice-weekly schedule from 
Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport beginning a day later.

Both routes are approximately 3,100 miles (5,000 km), comfortably within the 4,700 mile (7,560 km) range of the A321XLR. This distance will translate into a travel time of about seven and a half hours on the outbound flight. Pieter Elbers, CEO at IndiGo, said that the routes “mark the beginning of a new era for IndiGo’s long-range narrow body operations,” and emphasized there is much more still to come:
“We are excited to announce our flights to Athens from Mumbai and Delhi on India’s first Airbus A321XLR. With the induction of the A321XLR aircraft into our fleet, IndiGo will increasingly be able to operate deeper into Europe while maintaining the cost efficiency and operational reliability that have long defined our service.”
The IndiGo A321XLR Experience
The New IndiGo A321XLRs will include Indigo Stretch, the business class product that the airline began equipping its domestic A321s with last year. This will include twelve Recaro R5 recliner seats arranged in a 2-2 configuration in the first three rows of the cabin. Each seat features a back rest with privacy wings, a six-way adjustable headrest, and an electronic device holder. Row pitch is a generous 44 inches, with a seat width of 21 inches and a six-inch recline.
The aircraft also features 183 Economy Class seats, considerably fewer than the 208 that its domestic A321neos are equipped with. This less dense configuration helps to preserve the extended range of the A321XLR, but is also due to IndiGo offering a marginally more spacious Economy Class cabin compared to its normal product. Seats will have a 31-inch seat pitch versus the 28-inch pitch of domestic A321neos, and will also offer a 5-inch recline.
IndiGo will be the only operator on the routes to Athens for the first few months, but will be joined by 
Aegean Airlines from March. The Greek carrier will operate five weekly flights to Delhi and three to Mumbai from Athens, also using an A321XLR. However, it will have a lower-density configuration that seats just 138 passengers, including 24 business class suites with full-flat beds and direct aisle access, alongside 114 economy seats.
New Long-Haul Routes And More A350-900s
The new routes to Athens are just the latest in a range of international expansions that the airline has announced and inaugurated in recent months. These include:
IndiGo is currently using Boeing 787-9s that it is leasing from Norse Atlantic for these long-range routes. But they are set to be replaced by new Airbus A350-900s from 2027. The carrier placed an initial order for 30 aircraft last year, while also retaining purchase rights for an additional 70 aircraft. Airbus confirmed yesterday that IndiGo has now finalized a commitment for 30 more A350s, converting a memorandum of understanding signed in June into a firm order. This brings the airline’s total A350 orders to 60 aircraft, with purchase rights for 40 aircraft still remaining.
