Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NVI) at a jubilant ceremony in front of cheering crowds.

On October 10, 2025, Prime Minister Modi said that Mumbai’s long wait for a second international airport had finally ended and that the new development will play a major role in establishing the region as one of Asia’s largest connectivity hubs.

Phase 1 of Navi Mumbai International Airport was built at a cost of around Rs. 19,650 crores ($2.37 billion) and once fully operational will welcome 90 million passengers a year and handle 3.25 million metric tons of cargo.

With its four passenger terminals Navi Airport will work in tandem with Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport (BOM) and help alleviate the demand placed on the city’s original aviation hub.

Prime Minister Modi remarked that the new airport will connect local farmers to supermarkets in Europe and the Middle East and reduce export costs for nearby small and medium industries, boost investment, and lead to the establishment of new enterprises.

A spokesperson for the Indian government highlighted that over the past 11 years, new airports have been constructed one after another. In 2014, India had only 74 airports, while today, the number has crossed 160.

Prime Minister Modi plans to also establish India as a major MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) hub by the end of this decade.

The PM hopes that the country’s growth in aviation will provide young people with new opportunities.

“India is the youngest country in the world, and its strength lies in its youth,” said Prime Minister Modi.

In line with sustainable practices, the airport will feature dedicated storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), solar power generation and EV bus services for public connectivity across the city. The airport will also be the first airport in the country to be connected by water taxi.
