Greece braces for nationwide strike with air traffic control staff set to join

A nationwide strike in Greece planned for the start of October 2025 will see air traffic control staff take part with airlines already warning passengers of potential disruptions.

Planned for October 1, 2025, workers across Greece will down tools for 24-hours over plans by the government to allow the introduction of 13-hour workdays.

The strike is being organized by Greece’s largest two unions, GSEE and ADEDY, which are also calling for increase in salaries for its members.

The 24-hour strike is set to cause wide disruptions at schools, hospitals, government departments and bring chaos to Greece’s transport systems.

Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air said on September 26, 2025, that air traffic controllers had confirmed their participation and passengers scheduled to fly on the strike day were being offered alternate travel options.

In a statement the two carriers said: “According to the relevant NOTAM by Civil Aviation Authority, the participation of the air traffic controllers in the strike may be suspended following a decision by relevant court of law. Until then, and while waiting for the relevant decision there will be no changes on the AEGEAN and Olympic Air flight schedules.”

Jet2 also warned its passengers of the impending strike which it said will also affect local taxi and ferry services as well as air traffic control.

“Flights operating to/from Greece may be affected during this strike action, however, we are planning to operate all Jet2.com flights as planned so please arrive at the airport on time,” wrote Jet2 on its website.

The airline added: “You don’t need to contact us or take any extra actions – we will continue to monitor this strike action and publish any updates here on our website.

Other airlines expected to be impacted by the strike in Greece include Ryanair and easyJet.
