flydubai selects GEnx-1B engine to power Boeing 787s ordered in 2023

flydubai has selected the GE Aerospace GEnx-1B engine to power its upcoming fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners that the carrier ordered at the 2023 edition of the Dubai Airshow.

Two years later at Dubai Airshow 2025, flydubai and GE Aerospace put pen to paper on a 60-engine deal that includes spare engines and a long-term services agreement to support the carrier’s launch of long-haul operations.

flydubai’s upcoming 787-9s will be its first step into the widebody aircraft arena after solely relying on an all-Boeing 737 fleet.

On November 17, 2025, Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO at flydubai, said: “The performance and durability of our engines play an integral role in the success of our operations and fleet expansion plans, especially as we prepare to welcome the Boeing 787 aircraft to our fleet in the coming years. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with GE Aerospace as we embark on the next chapter of growth.”

According to flydubai, the GEnx engine powers two-thirds of all Boeing 787 aircraft currently in operation. An alternative option for flydubai’s 787-9s was the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 turbofan.

“We are honoured by flydubai’s trust and confidence in GE Aerospace technology as the airline enters its next phase of growth,” said Russell Stokes, President and CEO of Commercial Engines and Services, GE Aerospace. “The GEnx engines will deliver reliability, efficiency and durability to power the airline’s first widebody fleet. We are excited to help propel flydubai’s expansion plans.”

Flydubai said the engine order underlined its “confidence in GE Aerospace’s proven technology solutions, which offer best-in-class performance, durability and fuel efficiency”.

There has been speculation that flydubai will also place an order for both Airbus and Boeing planes at Dubai Airshow 2025.
