Boeing and the union representing its striking defense workers have met with federal mediators in another attempt to end a nine-week strike. However, the union rejected the company’s re-extended offer, pushing for its self-crafted contract proposal.
The joint meeting between Boeing and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM union) bargaining committee took place on September 29, 2025.
“The company continues to insist on staying within the same economic framework that our members have rejected three times,” the union said in a statement released after the mediation meeting with the company. “The way to end this strike continues to be the sensible pre-ratified offer that was approved by our membership.”
IAM District 837 leaders are urging Boeing to consider a four-year contract proposal drafted by the union, which includes their own terms regarding wages and ratification bonuses.
In September 2025, union leadership independently created the proposal, presented it to a membership vote, and achieved 90% approval before submitting it to Boeing.
However, Boeing has challenged the move, claiming that the proposal is not valid because it was not negotiated jointly. The planemaker said it was “unfortunate” the union had its members vote on an offer that Boeing never formally extended or negotiated.
Boeing accuses union of “misleading” members
In an updated statement on its website released after the failed mediation meeting, Boeing said it was “disappointed” the union walked out on talks. The manufacturer accused the union of “misleading” its members by “promising outcomes that are unrealistic and not aligned with the current market realities”.
“As we have said multiple times, we are open to constructive feedback from the union within the overall economics of our offer, which is at the top of the market for Midwest manufacturing,” the company added.
Since the strike started on August 4, 2025, IAM union members have turned down at least three contract offers, citing concerns over inadequate pay increases, retirement benefits, and healthcare costs.
