Aviation is filled with duopolies and triopolies. In the Middle East, it’s Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways that dominate the region, and they are known for being super-connectors due to the locations of their hubs. But to make it work, the airlines need scale in both network and total passengers. This means a large fleet of widebody aircraft with high passenger capacity. Emirates’ main hub is in Dubai International Airport, while Qatar Airways’ hub is at Doha Hamad International Airport. Etihad Airways, the youngest of the three Middle Eastern carriers, is based at Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport. All…
Out of a hailstorm of machine gun fire and heavy shelling, Pvt. Burton Holmes returned, badly wounded, to the 371st Infantry Regiment’s command post. His unit had been set up, lured out onto Hill 188 by the false promise of surrender, leaving them vulnerable to the surprise attack from the Germans. But Holmes returned only because his automatic rifle was out of commission. He refused to be taken to the hospital for treatment. Instead, he got a reserve automatic rifle and rejoined the fight, firing upon the enemy until he died. His try-or-die attitude was shared by all of Company C. His…
Resort fees and destination fees are among the most annoying “junk” fees you’ll find in the hotel industry. Lots of Marriott-family properties have these, and there are no easy ways to avoid them (in the sense that redeeming points and/or having elite status doesn’t get these waived). However, there is a trick to at least potentially getting a little bit extra value out of your fee, in theory, and most Marriott Bonvoy members don’t know this (and… perhaps many Marriott employees don’t either?). Marriott resort & destination fee Wi-Fi replacement perk Did you know that if you’re a Marriott Bonvoy…
On October 29, 2025, the National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB ) issued an urgent recommendation to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ensure the main landing gear is correctly installed on certain Bombardier Learjet aircraft. Recipients have 30 days to respond. The recommendation follows an investigation into a fatal accident involving a Learjet 35A in Scottsdale, Arizona, on February 10. During the accident sequence, the left main landing gear separated from the aircraft. The NTSB discovered three previous incidents in which Learjet landing gear detached from the airframe. The second of the U.S. Air Force’s two prototype drone wingmen, known as collaborative combat aircraft, began flight testing Friday, the service said.Anduril’s YFQ-44A drone carried out its first flight at an unidentified California test location Friday, the Air Force said. It follows the first flight of its General Atomics-made counterpart, the YFQ-42A, which took place in August.“This milestone demonstrates how competition drives innovation and accelerates delivery,” Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said in a statement. “These flights are giving us the hard data we need to shape requirements, reduce risk, and ensure the CCA program delivers combat capability on…
One of the most iconic aviation terms that has also become a household word is “Roger.” The word comes from early radio transmissions and the US Army Signal Corps just before the outbreak of WWI. The word persisted through the interwar period and was also adopted by the US Navy. The word rose to fame in WWII and the many subsequent movies about air battles of the conflict. As the British and US deepened their cooperation with each other during WWII, the word was soon adopted by the RAF. Previously, the RAF’s counterpart was “Robert” or “Robertson,” which had a…
Many of the most successful fighter pilots gained fame not only for their aerial tactics, but for their ability to pass their knowledge on to others. Ironically, some of those who handed down their tactical dictum to their men died because on one hubris-guided moment they disobeyed their own advice. Among these victims of their own negligence were World War I ace of aces Manfred von Richthofen and second-ranking American World War II ace Thomas B. McGuire Jr. Yet another cautionary tale was left by Neel Kearby. While a second lieutenant in the Army Reserves in 1938, Kearby shot up…
October 31, 2025, ©. Leeham News: We do a series about ideas on how the long development times for large airliners can be shortened. New projects talk about cutting development time and reaching certification and production faster than previous projects. The series will discuss the typical development cycles for an FAA Part 25 aircraft, called a transport category aircraft, and what different ideas there are to reduce the development times. We will use the Gantt plan in Figure 1 as a base for our discussions. We have exited the Preliminary Design phase through the Preliminary Design Reviews, PDRs, and now…
The Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 represent the pinnacle of long-haul passenger aviation, two engineering giants that defined luxury and capacity across generations. Yet behind the prestige and scale, the cost of buying, operating, and maintaining these double-deck and quad-engine aircraft has always been staggering. This feature breaks down the financial realities behind owning and flying the world’s largest passenger jets in 2025, revealing which program truly carries the heavier price tag. The Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 aircraft are no longer in production, but their operational and acquisition costs continue to set benchmarks for airlines and aviation investors worldwide.…
Flight delays and cancellations are mounting nationwide as the US government shutdown enters its fifth week, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warning that staffing shortages among air traffic controllers are likely to worsen heading into the November holiday travel season. On October 31, 2025, the FAA reported significant delays at airports in Austin, Texas, Newark, New Jersey, and Nashville, Tennessee, with average wait times ranging from 50 to 100 minutes. By midday, more than 2,200 flights had been delayed and over 300 canceled, according to FlightAware data. Officials said further disruptions were likely later in the day at Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth. At least nine FAA facilities were short-staffed on October 31, the agency…
