Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) is one of the most unique carriers to operate in the North American air travel market, and not just because of its high-profile interactions with activist investor Elliott Management. An airline focused almost entirely on connecting travelers with point-to-point flights that are looking for affordable service, Southwest Airlines differs from its principal full-service carriers in a few different ways. The legacy operator has been known for providing extra benefits such as free checked bags, although the airline’s strategy has fundamentally changed in recent years due to the influence that Elliott Management has recently had on the…

A while back, I covered how Qatar Airways was planning on adding all-economy aircraft to its fleet, in an incredibly dense configuration, no less. While it was clear this was happening, we weren’t sure of what the backstory was. Well, now we know… Qatar Airways has lots of Airbus A321neos on orderQatar Airways has quite the narrow body fleet renewal and expansion planned, as the airline has a total of 50 Airbus A321-family aircraft on order, directly with the aircraft manufacturer. This includes an order for 40 A321neos and 10 A321LRs (they’re the same planes, just with different range). The idea…

Composite structures, advanced radar-absorbent materials, and open-mission systems promise fewer maintenance man-hours and faster software upgrades. Its efficient commercial-derivative engines will extend the unrefueled range…

Delta Air Lines has one of the world’s largest Airbus A350 fleets and was the first North American operator of the widebody type. Known for its versatility and efficiency on long-haul routes, the A350 is a strong competitor to Boeing’s 777 and 787 Dreamliner family of aircraft. There are two variants in the A350 family — the A350-900 and A350-1000 — and Delta has commitments for both types, although currently it only operates the -900. I’m curious how my experience on this compares to that of others… A hotel finally asked me to show my AAA card! One of the easiest ways to save money on a hotel stay is by booking a AAA rate. While it won’t save you a fortune, many of the major hotel chains offer AAA members some percentage discount on the standard rate. In most cases, I also find that this is better than the typical “members only” rate, for those who belong to the loyalty program. So I always compare rates when I go to book a hotel. When…
