Flying at altitudes and speeds unheard of for contemporary jet aircraft, the Blackbird family required a fuel with unique properties to perform in the extremes the aircraft would be subject to. The Mach 3+ speeds of the Lockheed A-12, M-21, YF-12A, and SR-71 would heat fuel up to 350 degrees, and, lacking insulated fuel tanks, the aircraft required a fuel with a high-flash point that would not vaporize or explode under tremendous heat and pressure. Available jet fuels at the time would not work in this environment, someone would have to create such a fuel, and, in addition to fueling…

Emirates’ relationship with the Airbus A380 is one of the most significant partnerships in modern aviation. When Airbus launched its double-deck super jumbo in the early 2000s, few could have predicted that a single airline would come to define the aircraft’s legacy. Emirates not only became the largest operator of the A380 but also built much of its brand identity around it. With almost 120 units available, the Dubai-based carrier’s fleet dwarfs that of all other airlines combined. However, as the world of aviation evolves, questions persist: has Emirates over-invested in an aircraft that no longer fits the modern air…

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) has announced that it will be financing the acquisition of six Airbus A350-900 aircraft for Gulf carrier Emirates through Japanese Operating Leases with Call Option (JOLCO) structures, marking Emirates’ return to the leasing market after a near six-year absence. Five aircraft financings have closed, with a sixth in the works. This deal deepens a 40-year relationship between HSBC and Emirates and supports Emirates’ broader fleet renewal. This includes 65 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which will be delivered through 2028. These Airbus A350, which are already in service at Emirates, help the airline expand…

In all my years of traveling, this is the first time that something like this had ever happened to me. Fortunately this incident also showed how helpful a great hotel concierge can be… My phone decided to stop charging at Delhi Airport! In a previous installment, I wrote about my Air India A350 business class flight from London to Delhi. The plan was to have a roughly eight hour layover at the airport, before connecting to my Air India A320neo business class flight to Kuala Lumpur. I had booked a room at the Holiday Inn Express inside Terminal 3, and I…

Two of the United Kingdom’s major low-cost carriers, Ryanair and Wizz Air, have separately warned about the rising costs facing the aviation sector following last year’s Budget announcement. As reported by Financial Times, both airlines have cautioned that further increases in taxes and airport charges could prompt them to scale back operations in the country, and shift aircraft to more cost-competitive markets. Those closely following UK aviation will recall that during the Autumn Budget 2024, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a rise in flight taxes, including higher Air Passenger Duty (APD). From April 2026, passengers will pay around $2.63 (£2) more…

The legacy of American air power is a chronicle of iconic names and storied planes that made history for their engineering, innovation, and outstanding performance. When it comes to combat aviation, and specifically fighter jets, one of the most crucial metrics of a plane’s capability is its raw speed. In that arena, the United States proudly lays claim to many stunningly fast jets, but which was the fastest? To be clear, we are talking about fighters. No experimental prototypes or reconnaissance planes that occasionally had a missile strapped to the side. This list contains only warplanes that were made to…

Alaska Airlines has been in the news for both the right and the wrong reasons this week. On the one hand, it has reached a key milestone as far as its integration with Hawaiian Airlines is concerned, following its receipt of a Single Operating Certificate from the FAA. However, it has also had to come to terms with its third IT outage this year, with these crises costing millions. As far as the carrier’s fleet is concerned, Alaska Airlines favors the Boeing 737 family for its mainline operations, following the withdrawal of its last ex-Virgin America Airbus A320 series jets…

There is ample evidence of Soviet industrial espionage in the 1960s and 1970s, with the KGB specifically targeting the Anglo-French Concorde program. Networks of informants, typically mid-level engineers, clerks, or suppliers, embedded are described in declassified files and memoirs from both Western counter-intelligence professionals and former Soviet spies. Data from wind tunnels, stress analysis reports, material specifications, and progress summaries were all smuggled out by these networks. Due to the fact that Concorde was a collaborative Anglo-French project, many design documents were shared among several subcontractors, providing spies with various entry points. However, the information that made it to Moscow…
