Southwest Airlines, once a carrier with all-economy flights that only flew domestically and recorded profits for 47 years straight, is a different airline today. It’s no longer as profitable as it once was, and because of this, activist investment firm Elliott Investment Management swooped in to demand changes. “On the way back to the United States from NATO’s Defense Ministers meeting, Secretary of War Hegseth’s plane made an unscheduled landing in the United Kingdom due to a crack in the aircraft windshield.” Source: An explanation offered up by a Pentagon spokesperson after SecWar’s Boeing had to make an emergency landing. There were no reports of injuries among the crew or passengers, and although the Pentagon mentioned a crack in the windshield, other officials have not confirmed the exact nature of the emergency.

Italy has launched early studies for a next-generation aircraft carrier, described in its 2025–2027 Multi-Year Defense Planning Document (DPP) as the Portaerei di nuova generazione, within a record €31.2 billion ($33 billion) defense budget for 2025, up 7.2% from 2024.  The plan allocates €3 million ($3.2 million) this year for the development of advanced naval technologies, with €1 million ($1.1 million) designated for 2026 and €2 million ($2.2 million) for 2027. In the schedule update over the weekend, British Airways confirmed that the Airbus A380 will return to Dallas/Fort Worth in May 2026. The double-decker quadjet was last used to the Texas hub, where joint venture partner American Airlines has 84% of the flights, in March 2025. Having returned in August 2025, Qantas will continue to use its A380s to Dallas/Fort Worth through next year. It’s an interesting time for aviation in South America, on a variety of levels. Here’s the latest example of that, as Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes intends to start flying wide body planes. GOL will fly at least five Airbus A330-900neos GOL has announced plans to lease at least five Airbus A330-900neo aircraft from aircraft leasing company Avolon, marking a major step in the the carrier’s long haul expansion strategy.
