In the first half of 2026, the Airbus A380 will have 1,078 departures from the US to Europe. According to Cirium Diio data, they have fallen from 1,552 takeoffs in the same six months in 2025. That’s a substantial drop of 31% in a year. British Airways, Emirates, and Lufthansa will operate the superjumbo in this market. As you’d expect, they’re the same carriers that used the double-decker in 2025. In the late 1950s, when everyone expected World War III to go nuclear, the U.S. Army had to contemplate operating on a battlefield sprouting atomic fireballs. This put Army planners in a dilemma. Military theory said that forces had to be concentrated to overwhelm the enemy and achieve decisive results. Earlier this week, a Skywest Airlines Embraer E175 operating a flight on behalf of American Airlines under the Fort Worth-based US ‘big three’ legacy carrier and oneworld founding member’s American Eagle regional brand had to make an unplanned return to Omaha.
