In the world of modern aviation, two names dominate the skies when it comes to large turbofan engines: General Electric (GE) and Rolls-Royce. Each represents a distinct philosophy in engineering and design. GE’s GE9X, developed exclusively for Boeing’s upcoming 777X, is a testament to size and raw power, the largest jet engine ever built. Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB, meanwhile, powers Airbus’ A350 and has earned a reputation as one of the most efficient and reliable engines in commercial service. Both engines showcase the pinnacle of aerospace innovation, yet they embody very different approaches to achieving performance, efficiency, and sustainability. As the…
Alaska Air Group, the only scheduled passenger airline in the United States to operate its own freighters, today reported $142 million in “cargo and other revenue” for the third quarter. Shield AI has revealed a new artificial intelligence-driven uncrewed fighter capable of vertical takeoffs and landings that it says could represent the next generation of military combat aircraft and an advancement in the drone wingmen concept. The drone, dubbed X-BAT, was designed for expeditionary and maritime operations in contested environments. It uses Shield AI’s Hivemind software as its autonomous core, the company said in a Wednesday release.Shield AI said X-BAT’s ability to deliver combat capability while taking off and landing vertically, independent of any need for runways, could transform the way U.S. and allied air forces wage air warfare.“Airpower without…

A scheduled Air New Zealand flight between Christchurch and Sydney was forced to make an emergency landing on Friday, October 24. The flight, operating at NZ211, experienced a hydraulic failure mid-flight, as the aircraft was halfway across the Tasman Sea. As a precaution, emergency services at Australia’s busiest airport, Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), were on standby and met the aircraft on its arrival. The Airbus A320neo was able to land safely and was met by emergency crews and an engineering team. Subsequently, a local engineering team is now undertaking a thorough inspection to ensure the aircraft will be safe…

By Bjorn Fehrm and Henry Tam October 24, 2025, ©. Leeham News: We do a series about ideas on how the long development times for large airliners can be shortened. New projects talk about cutting development time and reaching certification and production faster than previous projects. The series will discuss the typical development cycles for an FAA Part 25 aircraft, called a transport category aircraft, and what different ideas there are to reduce the development times. We will use the Gantt plan in Figure 1 as a base for our discussions. Today’s topic, the Preliminary Design Reviews, PDRs, are marked…
The CEO of Airbus Defense & Space has indicated that the company is now in talks to sell 40 Eurofighter Typhoon models to Türkiye, and that these negotiations are in their final stages.
