Canada’s Nolinor Aviation is notable for having the oldest active commercial passenger jet in the world, or at least the oldest regular passenger fleet in a Western country. There may be small passenger airlines in Africa or Russia with older regional aircraft, e.g., the Angara Airlines Flight 2311 An-24 that crashed in 2025 was 49 years old. That said, Nolinor has the oldest Western-built airliner in regular passenger service. Even in sanctioned Iran, the oldest fleets are typically between 30 and 35 years old on average. The typical retirement age for a narrowbody airliner is 20 to 25 years, although…
The U.S. Pacific Fleet has confirmed the safe rescue of all personnel after an MH-60R Sea Hawk and an F/A-18F Super Hornet from the USS Nimitz both crashed into the South China Sea just 30 minutes apart. Five personnel, three on board an MH-60R Sea Hawk, and two in the F/A-18F Super Hornet, were recovered safely by the carrier group’s search and rescue assets, with official statements saying they are in a stable condition. At this early stage, only limited details are available regarding these two incidents. The MH-60R Sea Hawk, operated by Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 73 (HSM-73), went…
Las Vegas-based budget carrier Allegiant Air has a rather interesting fleet history, having initially flown rear-engined McDonnell Douglas narrowbody twinjets from the DC-9 and MD-80 families in its early years. Since then, it has grown to rely heavily on single-aisle Airbus jets from what is now known as the A320ceo (‘Current Engine Option’) family, but, as it looks to the future, it has deployed a new strategy. Indeed, rather than arranging like-for-like replacements from the new Airbus A320neo (‘New Engine Option’) family, the path that Allegiant Air has chosen to take involves putting the rival Boeing 737 MAX series at…
At the recent 2025 Oceana Air Show, Navy pilots shared stories that link the service’s airborne innovation to a 250-year tradition of courage and adaptability. As the U.S. Navy marks its 250th anniversary, the celebration is as much about the future as the past. For two and a half centuries, the Navy has evolved with every shift in technology and threat, adapting its ships, sailors, and missions to meet the demands of a changing world. That tradition of adaptation remains its defining strength. When the first Continental Navy put ships to sea in 1775, they carried the nation’s hopes more…
A United Airlines Boeing 767 scheduled to fly from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) returned to Washington after a passenger’s laptop dropped through the passenger cabin into the cargo bay. As the laptop had a lithium-ion battery, its unattended presence in the cargo hold represented a credible threat to safety. While commercial flights have been diverted due to passenger items being lost or wedged in a seat, an item dropping through into the cargo hold might be a first. But the pilots have been praised for their decision to put safety first, with passengers arriving…
The Sichuan is the only amphibious assault Landing Helicopter Dock in the world to feature an Electromagnetic Launch System. The catapult aboard China’s massive Type 076 LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) amphibious assault ship, the “Sichuan,” has been tested for the first time, images that appeared on Oct. 22, 2025 seem to suggest. The photos show the vessel repositioned toward the open waters of the Yangtze River, with the launch system uncovered and illuminated at night. According to South China Morning Post, a maritime safety notice established a no-entry zone in front of the dock from October 20 to 29 for “underwater…
JetBlue’s international network has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, particularly with the addition of transatlantic services to destinations in Europe following the delivery of brand-new Airbus A321LR narrowbody twinjets from the A320neo family. However, domestic flying remains the airline’s bread and butter, with six of its internal corridors within the US exceeding a distance of 2,500 miles. As the carrier doesn’t fly to Alaska or Hawaii, its longest US domestic routes come in the form of transcontinental jaunts between the East Coast and the West Coast, with California being a particular hotspot in the latter…
The ceremony, held in Trieste, coincided with the 71st anniversary of the city’s return to Italy and marks the ship’s transition toward full operational service. The Italian Navy’s newest amphibious assault ship, LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) Trieste, received its battle flag during a ceremony held onboard at Molo Bersaglieri, in Trieste, northeastern Italy, on Oct. 26, 2025. The event coincided with the 71st anniversary of the city’s return to Italy so has to highlight the symbolic bond between the ship and the city whose name it bears. The ceremony marking the delivery of the Bandiera di Guerra (Battle Flag) is…
In 2024, we saw Lufthansa’s new Allegris passenger experience take to the skies, several years behind schedule. With these cabins flying, it’s understandable that people actually want to experience this product, and see what it’s like. In this post, I want to provide a rundown of the routes that currently feature Lufthansa Allegris cabins, and are expected to feature them in the coming months. As more of these planes enter service, more passengers also have the opportunity to experience this. This is an especially good time to look at the status of Allegris, given that we’ve just seen the switch…
The F-16 is the modern era’s indisputably best mass-produced, multirole fighter. The Viper was conceived as nothing more than a daytime interceptor with high agility, but it was transformed into the most combat-effective fighter in the jet era. Nearly 5,000 have been made for 25 operators around the world, and it continues to evolve five decades after it debuted. The F-16 has proven to be endlessly adaptable and timelessly capable in the face of everything thrown at it. That is the lesson offered by the iconic F-16, an effective fighter jet doesn’t need every imaginable feature onboard. The F-16s’ carefully…
