The Local Controller’s Poor Judgment In Prioritization Of Their Ground Traffic Ahead Of Their Airborne Traffic Analysis: Hawaiian Airlines flight 70 (HAL70), N2165HA, an Airbus A321, and a Textron Aviation, Inc. C172N, N24CV, were involved in a near mid air collision (NMAC) over the point where runway 30 and the final approach path for runway 26L intersect at Long Beach (Daugherty Field) Airport (LGB). At the time of the incident, the local control 1 (LC1), local assist, and ground control positions were combined to the LC1 position in the LGB air traffic control tower and staffed by a single certified…
As two of the ‘big three’ US legacy carriers, American Airlines and United Airlines are close rivals in many respects. These competing carriers have plenty of similarities and differences, with an example of the former being the fact that they both fly the Boeing 777-300ER. Per ch-aviation, American has 20 (11.7 years old on average), while United has 22 (7.9 years old on average). Given the size of these large twinjets, both carriers have fitted them with premium-heavy layouts that use the extra real estate to provide more space for business class (and, in one case, even first class) passengers.…
Azul Airlines has reached a pivotal agreement with its unsecured creditors, marking a major milestone in its US Chapter 11 restructuring. The deal with the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors (UCC) supports Azul’s plan to reorganize its business rather than liquidate it, allowing the airline to continue operations while strengthening its financial foundation. As part of the agreement, Azul has secured approximately $1.6 billion in financing to maintain normal flight operations. The airline will return 20 underused aircraft to optimize its fleet and plans to raise $950 million in new equity, further improving liquidity and long-term financial stability. The restructuring…
A new United States Senate bill called the Keep America Flying Act of 2026 wants to ensure essential air traffic control (ATC), FAA and TSA employees continue to receive paychecks during the ongoing government shutdown, which is now in its fifth week. Tens of thousands of critical aviation staff have been required to work without pay since the shutdown began. Under the bill, payments would be drawn from unappropriated Treasury funds and would be backdated to September 30, the eve of the government shutdown. The bill has already gathered considerable support as workers faced their first empty paycheck on Tuesday.…
Emirates has finalized a major financing agreement with HSBC to support the delivery of six next-generation Airbus A350-900 aircraft, marking another step in its long-term fleet renewal strategy. In a statement issued on November 2, 2025, the airline confirmed that five of the six aircraft have already been financed through a Japanese Operating Lease with Call Option (JOLCO), with the sixth aircraft currently being finalized. The JOLCO structure provides competitive pricing and flexibility, helping Emirates to continue modernizing its fleet while diversifying its sources of capital. “Over the last 40 years, HSBC has supported Emirates’ journey from its very first…

I always find it sort of cute, smart, and hilarious, how airline CEOs like to flex about how they fly economy any chance they get, even if they’re not asked about it. Here’s the latest example of that — this showed up in my algorithm, and it gets at a bigger point that I think is interesting to discuss. Delta CEO talks about his flying habits, traveling in economy Fortune published a short video interview with Delta CEO Ed Bastian, about his travel habits. He mentioned a few things that I think people might find interesting: Bastian is usually one…
As everyone knows, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines are the Big Three operators of the United States. In November/December, Cirium Diio data shows they’ll collectively have 278 daily international long-haul departures. They’ve increased from 258 in those same months in 2024. So which carrier has the most long-haul flights? And which ones are the longest? source
On Thursday, a Delta Air Lines service from Paris, when landing in Boston, had a close call with a Cape Air aircraft taking off from an intersecting runway, which resulted in Delta having to perform a go-around. While this incident has resulted in the FAA launching an investigation, the data, along with statements made by the FAA, indicate that both aircraft involved had the relevant clearances for taking off and landing. While the cause behind this incident can only be confirmed after the investigation is completed, this might prove to be a wake-up call to the current staffing shortage at…
The modern widebody aviation industry is defined by competition between the A350 and the 787, at least until the 777X comes onto the market. When choosing which jet to go for, airlines have to consider their commercial viability. This judgment includes comparing each aircraft’s list prices, alongside their standard operating costs. Such an analysis positions the 787 Dreamliner as the cheaper aircraft to buy across most variants. However, it also usually has higher operating costs per seat. Learn more about how these costs compare below. Comparing the List Prices Credit: Wikimedia Commons The price airlines will pay for their aircraft will…
