For quite some time, Air France-KLM Flying Blue has been offering a paid status match promotion. This status match has long had residency requirements for eligibility, and that continues to be the case. On November 6, Jetstar announced a brand-new route. Beginning in March, Qantas’ lower-cost unit will fly from Sunshine Coast—Australia’s tenth-busiest airport by passenger traffic—to Bali and on to Singapore. Bali is to Australians what Cancun is to Americans and Malaga is to Europeans. It will surely make my celebratory Weekly Routes article (see the most recent edition). It will be the first time that the Sunshine Coast, not too far from Brisbane, has had two international routes. And the nonstop leg to Indonesia will, of course, be by far the airport’s longest-ever scheduled service. It comes amid other notable developments…

Whether Boeing will ever produce a true rival to the Airbus A321XLR has become one of the most discussed topics in commercial aviation. As Airbus’s long-range narrowbody continues to dominate orders from airlines seeking fuel efficiency and flexibility, Boeing appears stuck between addressing short-term pressures and planning for its next-generation aircraft. The company’s discontinuation of the Boeing 757 in 2004 created a long-standing gap in the “middle of the market”, routes too long for a standard 737 but too thin for a widebody jet. Airbus has since filled that gap, leaving Boeing with few immediate options. Boeing’s studies into a…

On Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration decided drastic measures were needed to ensure resilience in the national airline system, and they took steps to shave 10% of all air traffic across the top 40 high-volume US markets. This comes at a time when air traffic controllers are showing signs of strain due to the ongoing government shutdown, which has crippled airports, limited flight operations, and seen TSA checkpoint lines trailing out the door. The 10% of flights affected are expected to impact thousands of travelers across the United States. Currently, the FAA provides direction to more than 44,000 daily flights…

The legendary planemaker Boeing suffered a devastating blow to its track record of engineering innovation, quality, and safety when two 737 MAX jets were involved in accidents in a six-month span, shortly after the newly released aircraft entered service. The tragic deaths of 346 people on Lion Air 610 in 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines 310 in 2019 resulted in the largest-scale fleet grounding and production halt in the history of commercial aviation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were responsible for a comprehensive investigation into the root causes. Almost immediately after the crash of Flight…
