In December 2024, the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) proposed a regulation whereby airlines would be required to pay passengers cash compensation in the event that flights are delayed or canceled, just as we see in the European Union and United Kingdom. Given how late in the Biden administration this was proposed, it couldn’t actually be made law before the leadership change, as there was first a public commenting period, which put us into the Trump administration. A couple of months ago, the Trump administration made it clear that it didn’t plan to move forward with this proposal, and…
In the 12 months to July 2025, the United States had 254 million international passengers, equivalent to 696,000 people daily. This information is from the country’s Department of Transportation, and is for all short, medium, and long-haul international markets. Such traffic rose by 2% compared to the 12 months to July 2024. Only half of the 254 million passengers—some 128 million—flew on non-US carriers. The top 15 operators were Air Canada, British Airways, Volaris, Lufthansa, WestJet, Avianca, Air France, Aeromexico, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Copa Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, LATAM, and Aer Lingus. Turkish Airlines’ US traffic was recently examined.…
Finnair will be flying to 12 new European destinations as part of its Summer 2026 schedule. All routes will operate from the airline’s base at Helsinki Airport, and will be enabled by an expanded wet-lease partnership with Danish carrier Jettime. With these additions, Finnair’s network will grow to 113 destinations, including 93 in Europe, 11 in Asia, seven in North America (including Toronto, which opens in the summer of 2026), and two in the Middle East. The airline announced the new routes this week, saying that it was “tapping into growth opportunities” as it sees heightened demand for travel across…
Marking Emirates’ 30th anniversary of operations to Kenya, the world’s largest international airline has announced a third daily flight between Dubai and Nairobi, the African nation’s capital. Commencing on March 1, 2026, Nairobi will be served with 21 Emirates flights per week, allowing for passengers from Kenya and beyond to connect via Dubai to almost 150 destinations. According to an airline statement, the new flight complements Emirates’ existing scheduled services to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), adding an early morning arrival and departure to enhance two-way connectivity with key European destinations, including the UK, France, Norway, and Italy, as well…
After three decades of international flying, jet lag remains the biggest operational and personal challenge for me and all international aircrew. Jet lag’s correct name is Trans-meridian Circadian Dysrhythmia. Trans-meridian refers to the fact that you’ve crossed multiple time zones (meridians). The more you cross, especially eastbound, the worse the effect. Circadian refers to your body clock, which is normally aligned to a 24-hour rhythm of light, dark, sleep, digestion, hormones, and core temperatures, while dysrhythmia means a disruption or misalignment of that rhythm. Put these together, and it literally means “a disruption of the body’s natural daily rhythm caused…
As Hurricane Melissa swept through the Caribbean late last month, global air charter specialist Chapman Freeborn formed part of immediate response efforts. The company was transporting personnel and critical equipment from the USA directly to Jamaica mere hours after the hurricane made landfall. Hurricane Melissa formed in mid-October 2025 near West Africa, grew rapidly over the Caribbean, and followed an erratic path through Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas before dissipating near Iceland in early November. Jamaica bore the brunt of the destruction – entire communities were devastated, with widespread flooding, building collapses, and infrastructure failures. Preliminary damage estimates are around…
There are now just three days to go until the start of the 2025 Dubai Airshow, which will kick off on Monday, November 17, at Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), also known as Dubai World Central. The prestigious event is the highlight of the Middle Eastern aviation calendar, and, this year, it will run until Friday, November 21. Based out of neighboring Dubai International Airport (DXB), UAE flag carrier Emirates has big plans for the show. Indeed, Emirates confirmed in a statement released earlier today that the Dubai Airshow 2025 will see the carrier’s largest ever presence at the event,…
