U.S. officials are now confirming that a mission to seize the Marinera, formerly Bella 1, has been launched. Russian state media released imagery from the vessel showing a 160th SOAR MH-6 Little Bird nearby. After much speculation over the previous week, and a huge buildup of special forces assets in the UK, it now appears that the operation to seize the now Russian-flagged oil tanker, the Marinera, has been launched. Rather than using the aircraft deployed to the UK, multiple images taken from the ship and released by RT instead depict an MH-6 Little Bird, the 160th SOAR’s smallest helicopter,…
France has conducted a series of experimental trials assessing the feasibility of releasing drones from a military transport aircraft, using an A400M as the test platform. The campaign, led by the French defense procurement agency, Direction générale de l’armement (DGA), focused on manually releasing inert drone mock-ups from the aircraft. With inert mock-ups and manual releases shown in the video, the campaign appears focused on experimental validation of modeling, covering separation dynamics, trajectories, and likely aircraft safety margins. Validating simulations and physical parameters The tests were carried out jointly by DGA Techniques aérospatiales (DGA TA) and DGA Essais en vol (DGA EV). Representative drone mock-ups, without onboard electronics, were designed and manufactured by…
American Airlines has started rolling out free, high-speed Wi-Fi onboard its aircraft for members of its AAdvantage® loyalty program, the airline announced on January 6, 2026. The service, which is sponsored by telecom operator AT&T with Viasat and Intelsat providing satellite connectivity, will be implemented progressively. Narrowbody aircraft (including regional aircraft with a two-class cabin) will be the first to be fitted, although free Wi-Fi will be accessible on nearly every American Airlines flight by the end of the year, including those operated by the carrier’s long-haul fleet. In order to connect to the free Wi-Fi, American Airlines’ loyalty program…
Ultra-low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines has announced it is scaling back its fleet while also confirming the closure of several hubs in the United States (US). On January 6, 2026, the four-year-old airline said that the developments were designed to “simplify” its fleet and network amidst a “balance sheet transformation”. “Avelo Airlines has been recapitalized, and its cash position is now one of the strongest in the U.S. airline industry relative to its size. The airline will use this cash infusion and balance sheet strength to execute its long-term strategy,” said a spokesperson for the US carrier. Avelo will remove six…
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport’s (AMS) winter woes show no signs of receding with airlines continuing to cancel hundreds of flights each day due to challenging weather conditions. On January 6, 2026, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines confirmed that due to persistent snowfall, combined with strong winds, the carrier had to been forced to cancel 600 flights on January 7, 2025. To make matters worse KLM admitted that de-icing fluid supplies were running low due to the constant daily use since January 2, 2026. The carrier said that its supplier, based in Germany, was currently unable to guarantee timely replenishments after 85,000 liters…
PARIS (AP) — Ukraine’s allies said they made major progress Tuesday toward agreeing on how to defend the country if a peace deal is struck with Russia, saying they were ready to provide international guarantees to deter Moscow from attacking its neighbor again.Plans discussed at a key meeting in Paris included having the U.S. lead an effort to monitor any ceasefire — which could give Washington a direct role in keeping any peace with Russia.Leaders from 27 European countries and Canada, as well as U.S. representatives and top officials from the European Union and NATO, said they would provide Kyiv’s…
The Kahu‘ewai Hawai‘i Investment Plan, announced on January 5, 2025, will cover most of the airline’s customer touchpoints, from aircraft interiors and airport facilities to IT platforms. The carrier’s Airbus A330 fleet, which currently comprises 24 aircraft, will undergo a full cabin refit, with new seats, carpets and lighting. Those aircraft will also receive new business class seats, and a premium economy cabin will be introduced. In connection with this project, three A330s which are currently on lease will be acquired by the airline. Hawaiian Airlines is also investing in enhancing the passenger experience on the ground, with the building…
Across the Pacific, the US military is quietly reviving airfields first carved out of jungle and coral during World War 2. The work, say military planners, is practical, urgent, and rooted in a hard truth: fixed air bases are increasingly vulnerable in a war defined by long-range precision weapons. The effort is driven by the US Air Force’s Agile Combat Employment doctrine, or ACE, a concept that assumes US aircraft will need to operate from many different airfields and move frequently, rather than flying from a few large, permanent bases. Instead of relying on big, established hubs such as Guam, Okinawa, or Hawaii, US airpower would operate from dozens of smaller, far-flung locations. Fighters, tankers, and support aircraft would move frequently,…
The Marinera continues heading through the Atlantic while watched by ISR aircraft and a USCG cutter. Meanwhile, special forces personnel train at Fairford, and a U.S. official tells WSJ that a Russian sub is lurking. Footage released to Russian state-owned news outlet RT from the Marinera, previously named Bella 1, has confirmed that U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) assets have indeed pursued the evading oil tanker across the Atlantic. The sanctioned oil tanker was bound for Venezuela when U.S. forces attempted to board – the crew refused to allow the boarding, and made a quick about turn to head out into…
