Taiwan plans to purchase 10 Lockheed Martin C-130J transport aircraft from the United States (US) rather than carry out an extensive upgrade of its existing C-130H fleet, according to CNA. On February 9, 2026, citing Taiwan’s Republic of China Air Force, CNA reported that an upgrade of the C-130Hs names ‘Taimushan No. 3’ had been shelved due to the costs involved in the project. It was decided that purchasing 10 new Lockheed Martin C-130J and operating a mixed fleet was the better option. According to CNA, the planned C-130H upgrade had included integrating the cockpit interface and collision avoidance systems.…
PARIS — Western navies are betting on modularity to keep their fleets relevant in the face of fast-changing technology, according to naval commanders gathered in Paris last week, with an ability to switch out equipment that the Dutch navy chief likened to clipping Lego bricks onto vessels.New naval designs increasingly incorporate containerized payloads, and the commanders of the United States, Italian, Dutch and British navies cited advantages including mission flexibility, quickly getting firepower on the water, and at-sea replenishment.Italy’s new Thaon di Revel-class patrol frigates have been designed to carry containerized mission modules, while the Netherlands announced a class of…
Israeli authorities scrambled fighter jets to escort a Wizz Air UK flight operating from London Luton Airport (LTN) to Ben-Gurion Airport (TLV) after receiving reports of a potential security incident on board. The incident occurred on February 8, 2026, as Wizz Air UK flight W95301, operated by an Airbus A321neo registered G-WUKU, approached Israeli airspace. During the flight, at least one passenger reportedly received messages perceived as threatening, raising safety concerns among the crew. A Geran-2 (Shahed 136) attack drone is seen exploding in mid air shortly before an F-16 soars overhead, with the unmistakable sound of an M61 Vulcan cannon heard in the background. This is at least the second time such a kill has been captured on video, though this new footage – first posted on Telegram – is the most clear that we’ve had so far. The Iranian-designed one-way attack drone flies almost directly overhead the person filming the video and then is suddenly engulfed in a huge explosion several times the size of the aircraft. An F-16, said to be…
Often when I write about hotels, I’ll mention how many “keys” a particular property has. I can’t count the number of times that OMAAT readers comment on my use of that term. For example, Glenn just asked why I use this term, and said that it’s “one thing that truly bothers [him],” and “it’s beyond irritating.” I of course respect that take, but let me at least try to explain. And if y’all really decide you hate the term that much, let me know, and I’ll stop using it… The simple reason hotel rooms are referred to as “keys” In…
I’ve long published my rankings of the world’s best first class products and best first class lounges. In the past few years, I’ve tried to do the same for business class. It’s kind of hard to truly rank business class products, simply because there’s so much variability in terms of the quality of products across aircraft, food and beverage service can vary significantly across flights, people prioritize very different things in business class, etc. My list of the top business class products is essentially the airlines I generally most enjoy flying in business class, factoring in all the things that…
We just spent a few nights at the 86-key Capella Taipei, which opened in 2025, setting a new standard for hotels in the city. I was very much looking forward to this stay, not just because I thought this specific hotel looked beautiful, but also because I was intrigued by the Capella brand more broadly. I had heard amazing things about Capella, but wasn’t sure what actually set the boutique hotel group apart. Well, now I know, and I’m kind of determined to stay at every Capella property. This brand is much more differentiated than I was expecting. I don’t…
“This is just the beginning. It marks the start of an Artemis program that will evolve to support repeated and affordable missions to the Moon, in line with President Trump’s national space policy. Getting this mission right means returning to the Moon to stay and a future to Artemis 100 and beyond.” Source: NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, commenting as NASA’s Space Launch System ran into familiar trouble this week, experiencing hydrogen leaks during a very important, very public “wet dress rehearsal” ahead of the Artemis II mission. Though many were hopeful at first, agency head Jared Isaacman confirmed that the…
