The Boeing 787 is Boeing’s most modern and most efficient aircraft program. Similarly, the Airbus A350 is Airbus’s most technologically advanced aircraft program, essentially serving as the company’s equivalent to the 787 (although the two are not necessarily comparable in size). Both are the world’s first two majority carbon-composite airliners, and incorporate a wide variety of technological innovations to improve fuel efficiency, safety, and passenger comfort. First Delivery September 25, 2011 Number Delivered 1,138 The A350 includes three variants: the smaller A350-900, the larger A350-1000, and the newest variant: the Airbus A350F. This is the newest and most technologically advanced…
Ukraine’s First Deputy Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk, has hinted at a possible resumption of Saab Gripen fighter deliveries, after Sweden paused the plan in 2024 to avoid overlap with the multinational F-16 coalition. In an interview with BBC News Ukraine, Havryliuk was asked whether Kyiv should expect additional aircraft. “Practically, you named the nomenclature correctly,” he replied when F-16s, Mirage 2000s, and Gripens were mentioned. Pressed for details, he added: “When you see them in the skies over Ukraine, then you will understand.” Gripen back in the conversation Sweden initially considered transferring Gripen C/D fighters to Ukraine in…
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A missile attack by Yemen’s Houthi rebels set a Dutch-flagged cargo ship ablaze in the Gulf of Aden on Monday, officials said, wounding two mariners and forcing its crew to abandon the damaged vessel. It was the most serious attack in the Gulf of Aden, some distance from the Red Sea where the Iranian-backed Houthis sank two vessels in July. While the rebels did not claim the assault on the Minervagracht, they had threatened to strike ships as part of their campaign over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip, particularly as Israel squeezes in on…
It sounds like Boeing is working on developing its first new “clean sheet” commercial aircraft type in over two decades. I’m not sure if that’s refreshing to see and shows that Boeing is trying to innovate, or is just plain confusing, given the aircraft it’s replacing. Boeing in early stages of new narrow body plane design Designing a new aircraft from scratch is a process that can take well over a decade, so any innovation in the future needs to start with a new design now. Up until now, we’ve repeatedly been told by Boeing executives that the aerospace giant…
Since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine in late February of 2022, the use of the country’s airspace has become an increasingly controversial matter. At present, reciprocal sanctions are preventing many Western nations from flying over Russia, just as Russian jets can’t overfly such countries. However, this doesn’t just impact routes to and from Russia itself, but, rather, also airports further afield. Indeed, before the war, European carriers would frequently overfly Russia in order to benefit from direct routes to destinations in China. Now, however, reciprocal sanctions are forcing them to go the long way round. As a non-sanctioned nation, Chinese…
Braathens International Airways has filed for bankruptcy after failing to secure financing for its Airbus operations, resulting in the immediate cancellation of charter flights for tour operators, including Ving and Apollo. The filing was made at the Stockholm District Court and also covers Braathens Crew AB. About 200 employees are affected, all of whom are covered by the state wage guarantee. Airbus business deemed unsustainable Braathens International Airways was created in 2022 to operate Airbus aircraft on behalf of Scandinavian tour operators. Landing an airplane requires extreme precision. A typical runway is only about 50 to 200 feet. With external factors like crosswinds, rain or fog present, landing on such a small area can prove challenging. Fortunately, pilots can take advantage of modern technologies like a localizer to land safely. Overview of Localizers Localizers are systems in Instrument Landing Systems (ILSs) that provide horizontal guidance. It’s designed to help pilots align the airplane with the runway’s centerline during a landing approach. The centerline is the centermost point of a runway. It typically consists of a set of white-painted dashed lines. Some airports…
