American's Status Match Will Give You Better Status Than You Hold

American Airlines has announced a new status match offer that allows passengers to match their loyalty status from other airlines and even upgrade to a higher tier than the one they currently hold. The initiative is part of the carrier’s strategy to boost business travel sales.

According to the airline, travelers holding AAdvantage Gold or AAdvantage Platinum equivalent status with another carrier will be matched to the next higher tier within the American Airlines AAdvantage loyalty program. The offer is valid through October 31, 2025.

American Airlines is offering status matches with nine major carriers across the world, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Air Canada, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, and Virgin Atlantic.

Travelers who hold AAdvantage Gold or Platinum-equivalent status with any of these airlines can be matched to an even higher tier in the carrier’s AAdvantage program. For instance, Delta SkyMiles Silver Medallion elite members will be matched not to AAdvantage Gold, but to AAdvantage Platinum. Similarly, Delta Gold Medallion members will be elevated to AAdvantage Platinum Pro, instead of AAdvantage Platinum.

To receive a status match with American Airlines, passengers must submit proof of their current status with a qualifying airline listed above. After email verification and a review of the submission, travelers will receive confirmation and details of their new AAdvantage status via email. The complimentary status is valid for four months, with the option to extend it by earning Loyalty Points. The more Loyalty Points passengers earn over the four-month period, the higher the status they can achieve. By reaching one of the set Loyalty Point goals, American Airlines travelers can even extend their status through March 31, 2027.

Additional Perks For Platinum Pro And Platinum Executive Equivalents

Passengers with Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum-equivalent status on other airlines can enjoy additional perks through American Airlines’ status match offer. According to the Dallas/Fort Worth-based airline, travelers will not only be matched to the equivalent status but will also receive complimentary lounge passes.

For example, United MileagePlus Premier Platinum members will be matched to the equivalent AAdvantage tier and receive two Flagship Lounge Single Visit Passes. United MileagePlus Premier 1K members, meanwhile, will receive four Flagship Lounge Single Visit Passes.

AAdvantage is American Airlines’ frequent flyer loyalty program, designed to reward travelers with points (called Loyalty Points) for flying, using partner airlines, or making purchases with program partners. Members can use these points for flights, upgrades, and other travel-related perks.

More About AAdvantage Elite Status Tiers

The AAdvantage program has several elite tiers, each offering different levels of benefits. The main tiers start with AAdvantage Gold, which provides entry-level perks like priority boarding and bonus miles, followed by AAdvantage Platinum, offering additional benefits such as more bonus miles and preferred seating.

The two highest tiers provide even greater rewards. AAdvantage Platinum Pro elite tier includes perks like free upgrades on domestic flights and extra priority services, while AAdvantage Executive Platinum is the top tier, giving members the most benefits, including maximum upgrades, priority services, and lounge access.

To earn AAdvantage elite status, members must accumulate a certain number of miles or Loyalty Points. It is worth noting that one eligible AAdvantage mile earns one Loyalty Point. The best way to earn Loyalty Points is through flying. AAdvantage Gold requires 40,000 miles, AAdvantage Platinum requires 75,000 miles, Platinum Pro requires 125,000 miles, and the top-tier Executive Platinum requires 200,000 miles.
