American Airlines now offers travelers a new way to book their flights through an online booking tool that allows you to search based on the ‘type of trip’. Powered by AI, this feature enables the savvy traveler to pick destinations based on the type of trip they are looking for, rather than the traditional to-and-from approach.
A virtual demonstration of the tool was on display on September 30, where American’s Managing Director of Customer Experience – Digital Transformation, Anshuman Singh, explained to USA Today that more and more passengers are looking for experiences, rather than traditional travel.
Using Prompts To Take You To The Perfect Trip
Using a scope of prompts, the AI powered system can curate a unique trip. Whether it’s backpacking in the Rocky Mountains, or a family trip to the beaches of the Dominican Republic, the system will search with those features in mind and provide flights to airports that best fit your dream trip.
Currently, the system is only available on the airline’s website, for around 50% of users, as the carrier continues to develop and work with the prompts that travelers are requesting. The carrier noted that they will work with this data to enhance the system, and eventually roll it out in full, including via the airline’s app. Singh explained:
“People are more and more wanting to look for experiences when they travel. We are trying to step our way into this and see the kinds of prompts people are asking for. We need data to be our guide every step of the way.”
Will It Save Money?
Cost-conscious travelers are always looking for the best bang for their buck. The airline has responded to that, trying to understand how people think and curate their dream vacation. The airline’s Vice President of Digital Customer Experience, Samuel Liyanage, noted that the tool will allow travelers to stick to their budget, suggesting to the AI assistant that you can ‘spend less than $500 on flights’. Should the tickets be more than previously advised, they will be marked with tags that state over budget.
For those who are part of the American Airlines AAdvantage frequent flyer program, members can search using reward flights. However, mileage redemption will currently only provide for American Airlines-operated flights. For those looking to pay with cash / credit card, they will be provided with the airline’s full network, including codeshare and interline partnerships, such as American Airlines’ latest match-up with Toronto-based Porter Airlines.
To use the AI tool, customers can use simple language, such as ‘I’d like a summer trip to the South of France’, ‘Ski trips down the Rocky Mountains and staying in a five-star hotel’, or ‘Fly and flop at an all-inclusive somewhere in the Caribbean before Christmas’.
Take Off With American Airlines New Routes To Europe

Both of these services will be offered seasonally from May 21, 2026, onboard the Boeing 787-8 nonstop from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).
Additional flights will be added to Athens and Zurich, both from the airline’s home at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) from May 21, with its service to Greece taking off onboard the 787-8, while the service to Switzerland is served with the larger Boeing 777-200.
American will become the sole operator for a new daily, year-round service between Miami and Milan Malpensa (MXP) from March 29, served daily. The only other operator between the Sunshine State and Italy, is ITA Airways, with a direct link from Miami to Rome Fiumicino.
