Airbus to open second A320 assembly line in Mobile, Alabama in October 2025

Airbus has announced that it will open its second A320 final assembly line in Mobile, Alabama, in October 2025, to boost the production of A320 family narrowbody jets.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Alabama Department of Commerce on September 17, 2025. The department said that Airbus’s expansion would “further increase production capacity and reinforce Mobile’s role in commercial aircraft manufacturing.”

“Airbus has not only delivered high-tech aircraft from Alabama – they’ve helped build an industry,” said Bob Smith, Aerospace and Aviation Specialist at the Alabama Department of Commerce.

The announcement comes as Airbus marks a decade of commercial aircraft production at its manufacturing facility in Mobile.

Since its opening in 2015 with around 300 employees, Airbus’s Mobile site has grown to include more than 2,000 staff members, assembling A320 and A220 family aircraft for airlines in the US and Latin America.

In the last decade, Airbus has increased the size of its Mobile facility from 116 acres (46.9 hectares) to 190 acres (76.9 hectares) and has delivered hundreds of aircraft, beginning with JetBlue’s A321 nicknamed “BluesMobile” in 2016. By late July 2025, the planemaker had delivered its 100th A220 aircraft produced in Alabama.

“What began as a vision has evolved into something truly special, creating thousands of jobs, fostering generational careers, and driving substantial economic growth – not just in Mobile – but across the entire region,” said Daryl Taylor, Senior Vice President of Commercial Aircraft Operations in the US.

In a post on Facebook, published on September 15, 2025, Airbus indicated that it might soon increase its assembly lines in Mobile from two to three.

Airbus has over 20 manufacturing sites, each responsible for producing and/or assembling various aircraft components, which are then sent to final assembly lines where the complete aircraft is built.

Currently, the European manufacturer operates 12 final assembly lines in five different global sites, including its headquarters in Toulouse, France, which has two final assembly lines for the single-aisle A320 family, and one each for the widebody A330 and A350.
