Air Astana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus to acquire up to 50 aircraft from the A320neo family, with deliveries starting in 2031. The deal consists of 25 firm purchases and 25 options, and comprises both the A320neo and A321neo (including the A321LR sub-variant) models. It would represent the largest order ever placed by the airline, as it looks to establish Kazakhstan as a major power in Central Asian aviation.
The Kazakh carrier is placing particular emphasis on the Airbus A321LR as a pillar of its growth strategy going forward, with the next-generation narrowbody twinjet able to serve European destinations on a non-stop basis. 19 Years Of Airbus Operations

Today’s MoU marks the latest development in a long and strong working relationship between Airbus and Air Astana. The carrier explains that it began flying A320ceo jets in 2006, initially flying them domestically and “to international destinations in Central Asia and the Caucasus.” 10 years later, in November of 2016, Air Astana began to modernize its narrowbody twinjet fleet with the arrival of the first aircraft from the Airbus A320neo series.
Less than three years after that, November of 2019 saw the Kazakh flag carrier introduce the specialized A321LR model, which unlocked long-haul connectivity to destinations throughout Asia and even into Europe. This has helped increase its standing on the global stage, with CEO Peter Foster stating that today’s MoU “reflects a commitment to maintaining its reputation for operational efficiency and service excellence in the long term.”
Air Astana credits itself as being one of the airlines that has pioneered the use of the Airbus A321LR on ‘long and thin’ intercontinental routes, saying that its “operation of the A321LR over the past five years has set the standard for new operators of the type around the world.” The carrier has emphasized the fact that this deal “remains subject to shareholder approval,” but, in any case, the future certainly looks bright for its modern fleet.

Air Astana announced earlier this morning that it has put pen to paper with Airbus on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to purchase as many as 50 aircraft from the multinational European planemaker’s modern A320neo family of narrowbody twinjets. This figure would consist of 25 firm orders and options for 25 more, and Air Astana says that it features “a mix of Airbus A320neo and A321neo aircraft, with the first deliveries starting in 2031.”
Most notably, the Kazakh flag carrier adds that “the majority of the aircraft will be allocated to the Airbus A321LR,” underlining the burgeoning importance of this longer-range variant. This model has helped the airline grow on the world stage, not least thanks to its use of a premium cabin on the narrowbody twinjet. Peter Foster, who currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of 
Air Astana, welcomed the deal, explaining that:
“The A320neo family has proven to be an outstanding success in service with Air Astana over many years, and I’m confident that the new fleet will continue to boost sustainable growth and profitability.”
