Air Algérie orders 10 Boeing 737-8s as fleet renewal accelerates

Air Algérie has ordered 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with deliveries set to begin in summer 2026 as the Algerian flag carrier continues its fleet renewal.

The airline said five of the jets will arrive in 2026 starting in July, with the other five due in 2027.

The order gives Air Algérie a newer-generation narrowbody as it begins replacing and supplementing a short- and medium-haul fleet centered on older Boeing 737NGs. Its current narrowbody fleet includes Boeing 737-800s, -700s and -600s, along with a small number of older Airbus A320-family aircraft. Some of those jets are now well into their second decade of service, making the MAX 8 a natural next step up.

The new order adds to Boeing aircraft already in the delivery pipeline for the airline. Air Algérie previously committed to eight 737 MAX 9s at the 2023 Paris Air Show, with those aircraft expected to arrive later.

Air Algérie is also renewing its long-haul fleet. The carrier has begun taking delivery of Airbus A330-900s, which are expected to replace older widebodies and support international expansion.

Air Algérie’s press release announcing the order did not disclose the value of the 10-aircraft order or provide engine, cabin, or financing details. It also did not say where the delivery slots came from, but the timing suggests they became available from Boeing through another order cancellation or deferral.

Air Algérie traces its roots to 1947 and became Algeria’s national airline after independence, when the state took control of the company in the early 1960s. Based in Algiers, the carrier has long served as the backbone of Algeria’s domestic network while also building an international route map across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The airline’s fleet includes 27 Boeing 737NGs, five Airbus A320s, ATR 72 turboprops used on domestic and regional routes, and a widebody fleet that includes the Airbus A330s.
