FAA Stepped In To Get Plane Back After Emergency Landing On Red Lake Nation Land A Minnesota pilot whose plane was seized after an emergency landing on Red Lake Nation land has his aircraft back after more than seven months of dispute and federal intervention. Darrin Smedsmo, from Roseau, Minn., made an emergency landing on Oct. 15, 2025, after he says his engine failed, forcing him down onto tribal property. Instead of receiving assistance, Smedsmo said tribal authorities seized his aircraft, citing a 1978 tribal resolution that prohibits airplanes from flying below 20,000 feet over Red Lake Nation lands.
