Korean Air and Asiana host aviation program for youth amid workforce concerns

Korean Air and Asiana Airlines marked Children’s Day on May 5, 2026, by hosting a joint aviation education program at the National Aviation Museum of Korea in Seoul. The event brought together around 200 students for a day of career exploration and hands-on engagement with industry professionals.

Volunteer pilots and cabin crew from both airlines led the program, sharing firsthand experiences and offering students a closer look at what it takes to work in aviation.

“The students’ enthusiasm was truly inspiring,” said a Korean Air pilot who volunteered at the event. “We hope this experience encourages some of them to pursue their own dreams in aviation, and join us as colleagues in the air.”

An Asiana Airlines cabin crew volunteer echoed the sentiment. “It was meaningful to help plant the seeds for these students’ future aspirations,” she said.

Building toward integration

The event is part of a broader effort by the two carriers to collaborate on community outreach as they move toward integration. Korean Air and Asiana have been conducting joint educational volunteer programs for youth at least once a month, aiming to foster future aviation talent while strengthening cooperation between employees of both airlines.

The airlines said they plan to continue expanding these initiatives as part of their effort to build synergy ahead of the merger.

A looming workforce challenge

The program comes against the backdrop of a growing labor shortage in South Korea. The country recorded the world’s lowest fertility rate in 2025 at 0.80, and its population is aging rapidly.

The working-age population is projected to halve by 2065, with significant declines expected to begin as early as 2030. Some estimates suggest South Korea could face a shortfall of 8.2 million workers by 2033.

For industries like aviation, which depend on a steady pipeline of skilled professionals, initiatives aimed at inspiring the next generation are becoming increasingly important.
