A Leadership Controversy Exposes A Deeper Reality: Many Aviation Institutions Are Drifting Away From The Pilots They Were Created To Represent. News/Analysis/Opinion By Jim Campbell, ANN CEO/Editor-In-Chief It’s been a wild couple of weeks in the aviation news business… especially for the (very) few that have tackled recent developments with candor, clarity and the best interests of the Aero-Verse at heart. The recent turmoil surrounding the leadership transition at AOPA has triggered a wave of discussion if not dissension across the aviation community, raising difficult but necessary questions about the future direction of the organization and, more broadly, the effectiveness of legacy aviation advocacy groups. While the circumstances surrounding the sudden departure of a relatively new chief executive have generated speculation and concern, the larger issue is not simply about one leader or one decision. Rather, it reveals deeper structural challenges that have been developing for many years within what was once one of aviation’s most influential institutions.
