American Airlines Appoints oneworld CEO Nathaniel Pieper As New Chief Commercial Officer

American Airlines has appointed Nathaniel Pieper, who has served as the Chief Executive Officer of the oneworld alliance to which the Fort Worth-based US ‘big three’ legacy carrier belongs for around 18 months, as its new Chief Commercial Officer. He is set to take up the role on November 3.

Pieper is a seasoned aviation executive, having gathered experience at multiple other major US carriers in high-level roles over the years since entering the industry. His move comes with a vote of confidence from American Airlines CEO Robert Isom, to whom he will report, with Pieper also set to play a role in defining passenger experience at the carrier. Let’s take a closer look at the move and what it means.

A New Man For The Job

In a statement released earlier today, American Airlines confirmed that it had named Nathaniel Pieper as its new Chief Commercial Officer. According to Skift, the carrier had been without a permanent CCO for more than a year, following the departure of Vasu Raja back in June of 2024. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom explained that Pieper is “incredibly well-suited to lead our Commercial team moving forward.”

As a seasoned executive of the airline industry in the United States of America with more than a quarter of a century of experience, Pieper has served in, as American Airlines puts it, “commercial and finance leadership positions” at several of the country’s top carriers. While he will certainly have a lot on his plate as the airline’s new Chief Commercial Officer, Robert Isom is sure that he is up to the challenge. He said:

“Nat is a world-class, results-oriented leader who has achieved tremendous success throughout his entire career. He is well-versed in the airline business, having led teams across multiple disciplines at Northwest, Delta, and Alaska.”

A Long & Diverse Career

According to his LinkedIn page, Nathaniel Pieper’s experience as an airline executive dates back to September of 1997, when he became the Managing Director of Financial Planning & Analysis at Northwest Airlines. This was a role that he held for almost eight years, before becoming the carrier’s Vice President of Alliances in July of 2005. He then moved to Delta, the carrier that would later absorb Northwest.

At Delta Air Lines, Nathaniel Pieper first held the role of Vice President of Fleet Strategy & Transactions from October of 2008 to June of 2015, before becoming the carrier’s Senior Vice President for Europe, the Middle East & Africa. During his time in this role, which he held from June of 2015 to May of 2017, he was also on the Board of Directors at Virgin Atlantic, a long-term transatlantic partner for Delta.

His final role at Delta was the carrier’s Senior Vice President for Global Alliances. Pieper held this title from May of 2017 to June of 2018, and, after just over a year out in consulting, he subsequently joined Alaska Airlines as its Treasurer and Senior Vice President of Fleet, Finance & Alliances in August of 2019. This was a role he held until March of 2024, when he took on his most recent role as oneworld CEO.

As the new Chief Commercial Officer for American Airlines, a role that he will take up on November 3, Nathaniel ‘Nat’ Pieper will be responsible for a wide variety of facets at the carrier. These, the airline explains, include “strategy, planning and performance across alliances and partnerships, cargo, co-branded credit card program, loyalty, network planning, revenue management, and sales and distribution.”

Interestingly, Pieper’s remit as the new CCO of American Airlines will also see him work on passenger experience. Specifically, the carrier explains that, alongside David Seymour, its Chief Operating Officer, Pieper will jointly lead the Customer Experience team at American Airlines.

At the same time, American Airlines has also confirmed that Steve Johnson will return to his role as Vice Chair & Chief Strategy Officer following Pieper’s appointment. Johnson had been serving as the interim CCO following Vasu Raja’s aforementioned departure back in June of 2024.
