This Airline Ends All Flights To Canada As It Axes Its Transatlantic Boeing 787 Service To Toronto

Italian carrier Neos has suspended its Amritsar-Milan-Toronto route indefinitely due to “international geopolitical instability,” which has caused bookings to plummet. As a result, low load factors have made the route economically unsustainable, so Neos will now be absent from Canada entirely pending further notice.

The airline made its entrance to the transatlantic market less than four years ago with a direct service between Milan Malpensa Airport (MPX) and New York JFK International Airport (JFK) launching in November 2021, served by its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet.

According to the airline’s website, the route will be suspended as of October 8, 2025. Data from aviation analytics company Cirium confirms the route’s suspension, with its weekly flight now removed until the end of the summer 2026 season. It won’t be exiting Amritsar entirely, with its two connections from Rome Fiumicino and Verona to remain.

Neos launched this one-stop route between Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, Amritsar (ATQ) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) in April 2023 to provide connectivity for Canada’s large Punjabi diaspora, using its Milan Malpensa hub as a refueling stop. The Italian carrier uses its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet on this service, which involves around 16 hours of flight time, on top of a five-hour connection in Milan.

Neos said,

“Due to the current international geopolitical instability and the resulting decline in booking trends, with load factors unfortunately insufficient to ensure operational sustainability, we are forced to suspend all flights between Amritsar and Toronto as of October 8, 2025.”

Residents in the Amritsar area won’t be completely out of viable options to travel to Canada, as Qatar Airways offers a one-stop itinerary from Amritsar to Toronto via its Doha hub. The Qatari carrier launched a three-times-weekly service to Toronto last December using its Boeing 777-300ER fleet. There are also direct flights from Delhi operated by Air Canada and Air India, but this airport is often avoided due to long queues for connecting passengers.

Qatar has been flying to Amritsar since 2009 and currently operates a daily flight, while its Doha-Toronto service is also daily. The timings for travel from Amritsar to Toronto are favorable, giving connecting passengers a reasonable layover time in Doha. The outbound from Amritsar leaves at 04:10 for a 06:05 arrival in Doha, with the onward flight departing at 09:50 for a 15:55 arrival in Toronto.

Due to the shorter layover in Doha compared to Neos’ service, passengers will have a shorter total journey time than if flying with Neos. Qatar Airways also flies to Montreal (YUL) out of Doha with a daily flight, further enhancing connectivity to Canada. Toronto was the first North American airport ever to handle direct flights from India, with charter airline Canada 3000 launching a nonstop service from Delhi in 2001.

Neos Boeing 787 Dreamliner Fleet

Neos has six 787-9 Dreamliners in its fleet, with its first aircraft arriving in December 2017. Its Dreamliners can seat up to 359 passengers in two cabin classes, with 28 premium economy seats in the front cabin in a 2-3-2 configuration, followed by 331 seats in economy.

Similar to other 787 operators, including British Airways, the airline has faced significant engine troubles with its 787 fleet in recent months, forcing it to wet-lease capacity from other carriers to fill in. This includes two Airbus A340s courtesy of Romania’s Legend Airlines, and these planes have previously operated its Amritsar-Toronto route.

Neos is an all-Boeing carrier that also flies the Boeing 737. It operates both the 737-800 and the 737 MAX 8, and also flew a small number of Boeing 767-300 aircraft prior to the pandemic.
