Etihad Airways Adds New 8-Hour Airbus A321LR Flights To Europe

Etihad Airways is unquestionably one of the world’s fastest-growing network airlines. It has already announced service to an eye-popping 30+ new and returning cities this year, although big questions remain about whether such heavy expansion in so little time is sustainable. It is also expanding in existing markets.

In the most recent development, it will now deploy the Airbus A321LR to Amsterdam, albeit only temporarily. The narrowbody will also be used to increase the frequency to Düsseldorf and Munich. Currently, Etihad plans 22 LR-operated routes from its Abu Dhabi hub in 2026, although this number will increase.

Between February 1 and March 15, the UAE carrier will double its flights to Amsterdam. Since beginning passenger flights to Schiphol in 2013, Etihad has always served the airport with no more than a daily frequency. The increased operation, while temporary, is thus notable. Its performance will help to dictate whether it attempts to increase frequencies in the future.

The additional daily flight will be on the 160-seat A321LR. This has two first-class suites with a fully flat bed, a first for Etihad’s narrowbodies; 14 seats in business seats with a fully flat bed, a notable improvement over that cabin on its other single-aisle equipment (1-1); and 144 seats in economy (3-3; 30″ to 34″ pitch). It will coexist with the 371-seat A350-1000 to Amsterdam (the variant was recently reviewed).

OAG data shows the new 3:05 am departure time from Abu Dhabi means Amsterdam will now be fed by Etihad’s largest number of arriving flights from across Asia-Pacific. And the 7:50 pm arrival time back home will feed the most Asia-Pacific-bound services. An important development, it will grow its competitiveness and market share, albeit only briefly.

Etihad Grows Frequencies To Düsseldorf & Munich

In the first half of 2025, Etihad served Düsseldorf three times a week on the Boeing 787-9. Switching to the A321LR in October marked the first time the route had been served by a narrowbody. The much lower capacity meant the frequency rose to daily, providing a much more competitive offering. It also had a first-class cabin for the first time in years.

From September 1, 2026, Etihad will serve Düsseldorf twice-daily, with both flights on the 160-seat LR. OAG shows the route last had a double daily service in 2019, when the A330-200 was deployed. In 2026, the second daily service will leave Abu Dhabi at 2:30 pm and arrive in Germany at 7:25 pm. Returning, it’ll depart at 9:30 pm and get back at 6:00 am+1. It’ll supplement Etihad’s existing 2:30 am departure from Abu Dhabi and 7:05 pm arrival back home, providing more connectivity.

Then there’s Munich. Part of Etihad’s network since 2005, the Bavarian route has not previously had more than a twice-daily service. That will change on September 1, 2026, when a three-daily operation will exist, with the A321LR supplementing the 787-9. The 160-seat LR will leave Abu Dhabi at 9 am and return at 12:20 am+1, connecting Munich to another wave of Etihad’s Asia-Pacific flights. It’ll now have more Munich flights than Emirates and Qatar Airways.

When writing on December 3, and subject to change, Etihad’s LR network in 2026 consists of 12 airports in Europe, eight in Asi,a and two in Africa. Recent LR-operated launches include Krabi, together with Medan and Phnom Penh. Obviously, more routes will be announced soon, while some (including Amsterdam) will only see the narrowbody for a brief time.

Etihad first deployed the 160-seater to Zurich in November 2025. The single-aisle equipment’s frequency varies from eight weekly to twice-daily. When added to its widebody operation, it has a record triple-daily service to the high-yielding Swiss city. Zurich is one of only a handful of European airports with that frequency. Whether you like longer narrowbody flights or not, the equipment is playing a critical role in increasing the airline’s competitiveness.
