When you achieve a certain airline tier or a part of their lounge program, the first place you want to go once you get to the airport is to the (usual) serenity of the airline lounge. Airlines worldwide have installed lounges at their home and destination airports, where they can treat their most loyal customers.
Airline lounges with direct gate access
While this idea isn’t new, several airlines offer direct lounge-to-gate access. But what does this mean?
Lounge-to-gate access is where customers visiting the airline lounge can board from the lounge directly to the gate nearby, bypassing the lines of general passengers waiting in the terminal. This for lounge passengers means they can spend more time in the airline lounge, boarding at the very last minute, or they could even be first on the aircraft and score the best overhead luggage space for their personal belongings.
Direct boarding access for lounge members may differ from airport to airport and the airline you travel with. An example is in Honolulu at Daniel K. Inouye International (HNL). Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways operates its checker Airbus A380 to the Hawaiian airport and introduced a lounge where passengers can board directly from the lounge. The ANA lounge is located on Terminal 2, on the third floor.
When boarding takes place, there are two jet bridges from the terminal to the aircraft, one serving the upper deck and one serving the lower deck. General passengers boarding from the main airport terminal board from the lower level, while those in the ANA lounge board to the upper deck.
ANA’s Suite Lounge in Honolulu has a refined interior. It is the closest airline lounge to any gate and the only one at the airport with direct boarding access. Inside the lounge, passengers are treated to several food options, such as Hawaiian light meals and acai bowls. Menus change with the seasons, but all year long, passengers can enjoy various other benefits, such as free WiFi and newspapers. There is one downside to the airline lounge in Honolulu, which is that it lacks shower rooms.
Eligible passengers can access the ANA lounge if they are traveling in First or business class, are Diamon Service Members, or are lounge access card holders. The lounge is open from 08:30 to the final ANA-operated flight.
While there are other Star Alliance operators at Honolulu airport, only ANA allows its own passengers into its lounge. All other Star Alliance flights utilize the United Club, which is located above Gate G2 in Terminal 2.
Teesside Airport boarding from the lounge
Teesside Airport (MME) is another small but mighty airport that is changing how loyal passengers are treated in the United Kingdom. The airport upgraded its Rockliffe Lounge and now allows eligible SkyPriority passengers (on the airport’s daily services with KLM to Amsterdam) to board directly from the lounge.
The airport has a lounge host that now escorts customers directly from the Rockliffe lounge to the gate. This allows guests more time to relax in the lounge until the final minutes before the flight departs.
The Rockliffe Lounge provides a wide range of local food and beverages, is served buffet style, and is open for all flights. However, as the first airport in the United Kingdom to offer a direct lounge-to-air experience, it is currently limited to KLM flights.
Teesside International Airport used to be called Durham Tees Valley Airport and serves the areas of Teesside, Country Durham, and North Yorkshire. Current operators at the airport include:
- BH Air
- Eastern Airways
- KLM
- Ryanair
- TUI Airways
Emirates is leading the charge
Regarding Emirates, it’s no surprise they are another carrier leading the lounge-to-gate innovation. Their hub at Dubai International Airport (DXB), one of the busiest airports in the world by international passenger numbers, allows passengers from their business and first class lounges direct access from lounge to plane.
I’ve been fortunate enough to try this myself; a few years ago, I traveled from Dubai to Dublin and had access to the Emirates business class lounge. This is located on the upper floor above the main terminal area. After enjoying a few drinks and beverages and exploring the airline’s huge lounge, our flight began to board. Within the lounge itself, there are counters located just above the airport gate. The steward could board the lounge passengers, where a small staircase would lead us down to the aircraft gate. You would then join the rest of the passengers on the airbridge. This service is available from the Concourse A lounge.
The Emirates business class lounge has many choices for food and beverages. More recently, Costa Coffee has popped up in the airport’s Dubai International Concourse B lounge. It allows passengers to enjoy freshly brewed coffee in the lounge, the champagne bar, or the spa, where they can be pampered before their next flight.
Biometric entry
Entry to the Emirate lounge is easy. Biometric facial recognition scans you before entering the lounge. Lounge access is complimentary for all those traveling in Emirates business class or higher unless you hold a Skywards membership and are eligible. Paid access is also available at select lounges, depending on current demand.
Emirates operates from Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport, its terminal. Inside the terminal, it is easy to transfer to your next flight, enjoy the myriad of shopping and food options, or leave to explore the sights of Dubai. The terminal is connected to the other parts of the airport by bus, train, and on foot.
Delta Sky Club, Chicago O’Hare
In the United States, some US airports have pockets of gold, such as Delta’s offering at its Sky Club in Terminal 5 at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. The airline is one of the only to offer direct boarding to select flights in the US, which ensures you don’t have to return to the terminal with general passengers. Delta uses its strategic location near Gate M11 to offer direct lounge-to-gate boarding for flights to La Guardia (or other flights if using this gate).
This refreshing experience provides guests ample time to enjoy the modern design of this terminal, which has plenty of seating and panoramic views of the tarmac. Keep in mind that the direct lounge-to-gate boarding is only available to those departing from gate M11; otherwise, you will need to return to the terminal if your flight is departing from another gate.
The Delta Sky Club at Terminal 5, Chicago O’Hare, is open Sunday through Friday from 04:30 to 20:00 and again on Saturday from 04:30 to 17:30. Other SkyTeam partner lounges at Chicago include the Air France Lounge (T5) and SAS Lounge (T5—gate M19-20); however, these do not offer direct lounge access to the plane.
Other cool lounges around the world
While these airports may not have the unique lounge-to-plane service, a recent study by Conde Nast identified these airport lounges as some of the best in the world. Which ones have you visited?
