Capital One Venture Business Application Experience: One Approval, One Denial

We recently saw the launch of the Capital One Venture Business (review), which in reality is a rebranding of the former Capital One Spark Miles. The card has a $95 annual fee, and offers a minimum of 2x miles on all purchases, plus up to $100 in annual credits, plus a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fee credit every four years.

Given that this card is offering a massive welcome bonus, I decided to submit a couple of applications to test something. Ultimately we went one for two, which I’d consider to be pretty good, especially since it got me a useful data point. However, the denial reason isn’t what I expected.

Qualifying for the Venture Business 150K bonus miles offer

For applications through June 8, 2026, the Capital One Venture Business is offering a welcome bonus of up to 150,000 Capital One miles, structured as follows:

  • Earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $7,500 within the first three months
  • Earn an additional 75,000 bonus miles after spending a total of $30,000 within the first six months

Assuming you can reach the spending requirement, this is an excellent bonus on a card with a reasonable annual fee, and there’s no reason not to take advantage of that.

The question is, who is eligible for this offer? Capital One tends to have pretty vague rules, and if you look at the application, you’ll see the following:

Existing or previous Accountholders may not be eligible for these bonuses.

Does this refer specifically to those who have this exact card, which was only recently launched? What about those who had the Spark Miles, which the new Venture Business replaces (though Spark Miles customers aren’t automatically being converted)? And what about those with the the Capital One Venture X Business (review)?

The good thing with Capital One card applications is that after submitting your application you can quickly tell if you’re eligible for an offer or not (at least based on my experience):

  • If you get approved for a card without a notice to the contrary, that means you’re eligible for the bonus
  • If you’re not eligible for the bonus on a card, you’ll be informed of this during the application process, and will be offered alternative cards, or will be denied

Anyway, I was curious. I had the Spark Miles in the past, and also currently have the Venture X Business. I submitted my application, and was instantly denied. I initially assumed that was simply because I was ineligible for the bonus based on having the Spark Miles in the past. However, as soon as I received my decision letter, it gave a different reason:

Thank you for applying for a Venture Business Credit Card. Unfortunately, after reviewing your application, we cannot approve your request at this time. The reason(s) for our decision are:

  • Based on your application information, prior and anticipated spend at merchants with high transaction costs

Wow, that’s… a rather surprising and direct reason. So I can’t say with certainty whether those who have or have had the Spark Miles could get approved for the Capital One Venture Business, but I’d certainly appreciate any data points! I wouldn’t be surprised if they were eligible, but can’t say with certainty.

Then I had Ford submit an application. He has the Venture X Business, but never had the Spark Miles. He was instantly approved for the Capital One Venture Business, so that means he’ll qualify for that huge bonus!

For what it’s worth, it doesn’t appear that applications for this card are reporting to personal credit reports for the purposes of Chase’s 5/24 rule. So to recap, based on my experience:

  • You’re eligible for the Venture Business bonus if you have or have had the Venture X Business
  • You may or may not be eligible for the Venture Business bonus if you have or have had the Spark Miles (I was denied in this scenario, but for different reasons)

There’s no reason to leave these bonus miles on the table

I think the Capital One Venture Business is a really compelling card in general, given its reasonable annual fee, rewards structure, and credits that even help offset the cost. While I personally think the Capital One Venture X Business is worth the premium, admittedly not everyone wants to pay the higher annual fee upfront.

Assuming you can reach the spending requirement over the course of six months, I think this offer is well worth it. If you spent $30,000 you’d earn the 150,000 bonus miles, plus the 60,000 miles you’d ordinarily earn (at the rate of 2x miles per dollar spent), so that’s a minimum of 210,000 miles, or 7x miles per dollar spent. For everyday spending, that’s pretty awesome as part of a bonus.

Even if you can’t reach that big of a spending requirement, even the bonus of 75,000 miles after spending $7,500 within the first three months is quite good, and could be a reason to pick up this card.

If eligible, there’s no reason to leave these miles on the table

Bottom line

The $95 annual fee Capital One Venture Business was recently launched as a rebranding of the former Spark Miles, and it has an excellent welcome bonus of 150,000 miles upon completing minimum spending.

I decided to get some firsthand experience with the application process and can confirm:

  • Getting approved for the card (and earning the bonus) is possible if you have Venture X Business
  • I can’t speak to whether or not you’re eligible for the Venture Business if you have or have had the Spark Miles in the past, because I got denied, but for a different reason
  • The card shouldn’t count toward the 5/24 limit, if that’s a concern you have

If you’ve applied for the Capital One Venture Business, what was your experience like?
