1,000+ Flights: The Top Non-UK Airlines At London Heathrow Airport This December

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) is the busiest air hub in the whole of the United Kingdom, with hometown carriers British Airways and Virgin Atlantic naturally accounting for a great deal of the facility’s traffic. However, that isn’t to say that other airlines don’t also have a considerable presence in West London.

Indeed, according to current scheduling data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, three airlines have scheduled more than 1,000 flights each to and from London Heathrow Airport this December. Even when dipping below the 1,000-flight mark, there are plenty of foreign carriers operating multiple daily frequencies on multiple routes to and from the West London hub this month, as we shall now explore in detail.

Two US Carriers Rule The Roost

The top non-UK carrier at Heathrow this month is American Airlines, with 1,132 flights to and from the facility penciled in for December 2025. These are split between the Boeing 777-200ER (388), 777-300ER (406), and 787-9 (338), with Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) being the most popular destination. The Texan hub sees four daily round trips from London, with Charlotte (CLT) and New York (JFK) not far behind, on three apiece.

Elsewhere, AA’s Star Alliance rival United Airlines has a similarly large presence, with 1,108 flights scheduled. These are split between the Boeing 767-300ER (612), 767-400ER (52), 777-200ER (310), and 787-9 (124), with Newark (EWR) seeing the most flights (up to seven a day), followed by Chicago O’Hare (three). Commenting on the importance of Heathrow, Patrick Quayle, United’s SVP of International Network & Alliances, said in 2022:

“For nearly 30 years, United has provided a critical link between the US and London, maintaining service (…) and strategically growing our schedule to keep our customers in these key global business centers connected.”

Heathrow’s Top European Airlines

Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus is the third and final non-UK airline with over 1,000 flights scheduled to and from Heathrow this month. 932 of its 1,058 services are set to be operated by the Airbus A320neo, with the remaining 126 split between six with the A320-200 and 120 with the A321neo (of which Aer Lingus flies the A321LR and XLR models). Most of its LHR flights are to Dublin, but Cork, Knock, and Shannon are also served.

German flag carrier Lufthansa is Heathrow’s fourth-largest non-UK airline by flights operated, and has the biggest figure among those with totals under 1,000. All but 10 of its 931 flights are set to be operated by the Airbus A320neo, with the remainder served by the A321-200 (two) and A321neo (eight). Frankfurt sees a whopping 12 daily rotations, while Munich has two to five, and Lufthansa’s only non-German route (from Salzburg) also serves LHR.

Rounding out the top five, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has planned 836 flights to and from Heathrow this month, operated entirely by the Airbus A320neo. These serve the three capital cities of the countries where SAS is the flag carrier: Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL) accounts for 288 flights, compared to 279 for Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH) and 269 for Stockholm Arlanda (ARL). Some of these services are flown by the SAS Connect brand.

Other Long-Haul Big Hitters

Moving away from Europe, and back into the long-haul space, Delta Air Lines lags somewhat behind its US ‘big three’ legacy rivals, with ‘only’ 603 flights scheduled to and from Heathrow this month. These are split between the Airbus A330-200 (231), A330-900 (248), and Boeing 767-400ER (124), with Atlanta’s thrice-daily flights representing the top frequency. Meanwhile, New York JFK sees two daily Delta departures from Heathrow.

Air Canada is another North American big hitter at Heathrow, with 496 flights scheduled using the Airbus A330, Boeing 737 MAX, 777, and 787 families. Its top destination is Toronto, with three rotations a day. Meanwhile, the Middle East is also a key market for the UK’s top air hub, and the biggest carrier from this region by flights operated is Qatar Airways (584). The carrier comes to LHR up to 10 times a day using various widebodies.
